My dress needs to be a 6 its a 10

Im curious how much this will cost. if you guys have any guesses at all. i am also very short, so alot needs to come off the bottom. which makes me worried that it will take away from the skirt. so i would rather them make the torso shorter. is that even possible?

  • i thought the pictures would be bigger, its essense of australia d1186
  • Your best bet is to find a reputable seamstress and discuss what you want done with her.  A seamstress can give you an idea of cost as well as what to do to take the dress in and hem it while keeping the proportions the same.

  • My dress was too long on me too and I didn't want to loose the bottom style. My seamstress was able to shorten it by picking up pieces and sew it directly to the design so no fabric cut was required. This is my dress: http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?style=V7138&page=0&pageSize=36&keywordText=&keywordType=All

According to my seamstress it is cheaper then if you cut the material. I'd be worried more about taking in the dress. It sounds like it has a lot to be taken in. It sounds like you haven't purchased the dress yet. If you haven't, you should purchase it on your size or closer to your size (8). Alteration can cost a lot of money.

You should email the seller and see if they have it in your size. Good luck!

  • this is the dress on me with clips. and im stading on a pedistal. you can see the back in the mirror.

  • You definitely need to talk to a seamstress - talk to a few to get an idea of prices.
  • Your best solution is to talk to a reputable seamstress, quality work does not come cheap though.  Are you worried about costs?  Then, sell your dress on ebay and look for another, you may not save $$ with this option, but you can try it.
  • Very pretty dress!!! I am sure you will be able to find a wonderful seamstress, who can do magic with your dress.

So for the price, to hem my dress by tucking in the length to the outside layer (approximately 5 inches) and fix the satin and crimnoline, it costs $250.

I also added a bustle, american style, and that costs $150. It looks like your dress won't need complicated bustling since the train is shorter so that might cost less.

My dress doesn't need to be taken in because it has a corset back.

I live in the San Francisco Bay area so I am sure it will be cheaper where you are at. Good luck!!!
  • I don't have final numbers on what mine is going to cost, but I bought a discontinued dress that was a size 10, and it's being taken down to a size 2. I made sure I found an amazing seamstress, and she has no doubt it can be done. 6-8 inches was taken out of the top, and more than a foot will be taken off the bottom (except the skirt part is different than the top, so she's pulling it up from where the two meet so I don't lose the embroidery and beading at the bottom).

I'm not saying it can be done, but depending on the dress and the seamstress, you'd be amazed.
  • Definitely talk to a seamstress. Ask for local recommendations for a really good one. They will be able to give you ideas for your specific dress.

An option for hemming it without shortening the torso is to have small pickups put into the top layer. That's what I did and it turned out great. It left the bottom detail and it was cheaper to do that then shortening the torso.

Mine cost $350 for the pickups, hemming the inner layers, taking it in (only about 1/2 size), and a bustle.

  • it ended up being 240. but like. to the person who said just sell my dress and pick another one????? are you even a bride! the dress is sacred! lol
