how expensive/possible is it to add a custom lace one-strap to a strapless dress?

I have seen very few one-strap dresses that I've liked entirely.  I've seen many strapless dresses that I liked the shape, material and design.  Is it possible, and if so at what price range, to get add a sheer lace one-strap onto a strapless dress?  How does customizing details like that work in general -- through the designer or at a specialty tailor?

  • It should be a very easy addition. If it's an expensive, high-end dress, the designer might do it him/herself, but generally it would be done by a seamstress when you're doing alterations. If you need to match the fabric to a piece of the dress, you might want to inquire about ordering that fabric from the manufacturer of the dress.

Thanks so much for the response.  It'd probably not be an expensive high-end dress, but rather below $1000. Any specific idea of cost?  Also, any idea how they would do it?  I tend to like the look that sort of sweeps over the bust/neckline as pictured here (only instead of the sheer, using a very sheer lace): http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?page=11&style=J1237

or very much like this one in this dress: http://www.weddingshoppeinc.com/pr/Alita-Graham-7350/2/25786

Also, since I'm new to learning about customizable things, when I see bows or beading/gems I don't like I could opt to not have them on the dress, right?

  • My seamstress charged $125 to add 50s style cap sleeves to my dress.  Thats for two things, though, so I don't know what one would cost.
