Sample sale dress that needs cleaning

So i bought my dress at a sample sale, its a gorgeous princess style YSA makino that i literally saved about 70% on (yay)

The issue is im pretty sure its dirty. Not obvious dirt like on the armpits or anything like that. The bodice and the upper part of the skirt is off white tulle with lots of folds, but right in the middle (like going all around the waist) the tulle seems off-color. Its kind of yellowish/greyish. I was convinced that it was part of the design when i bought it but now i think its just dirty

Anyway to make a long story short, i want to get it cleaned. Where do i take it? The salon that had the sample sale (they did it at a different store, not at the actual salon) or take it to the cleaners? How much will something liek this cost? It has many layers (underneath the skirt) but mostly its just polyester and tulle. Is there a chance that cleaning it will damage it?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Sample sale dress that needs cleaning

  • I wouldn't try cleaning it myself, as I'd be afraid of water spots or the like.  And don't take it just to any dry cleaners, as some may damage beading or other embellishments.  There are cleaners who specialize in delicate fabrics and wedding gowns.  Ask the store where you bought it for a recommendation (but probably don't go through the store, as they may mark-up the price in order to take a cut).  I also bought a sample gown at about 60% off, and the salon is paying for it to be spot-cleaned.  If I'm not satisfied with the results, they will pay half of a full cleaning, which they quoted as $250.  I'm definitely going with the spot cleaning first, and if just that small section of your gown is dirty, that's all you should need as well.  Best wishes!

  • I bought my dress off the rack at a sample sale and took it to a local cleaner's.  They charged $30-$50 depending how fancy your dress was and they worked miracles getting the spots out.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • Are you sure it's poly? Have you actually checked the tag? I find it hard to believe that a gown that would usually retail for $2K-$5K would be polyester.

Yes the tag definitely says polyester

However there are numerous layers, beading, lace etc throughout
I wouldnt dare try to clean it myself. Its a spot yes, but a large spot (its basically the entire waist region)
Thanks for the tips guys! ill post on a local board to see if i can find a cleaner.
