i am having trouble locating a designer/retail shop who carries gowns that are not white or ivory.  I especially like champagne or pale pink colors.  any suggestions?

Look at bridesmaid dresses.  They can be made in almost any color. 

What kind of dress are you looking for?  If you want a traditional looking wedding dress, you might have more of an problem.  You could always find a style you like and have a dress maker re-create it in another color, or dye it or something.

Maggie Sottero has a wide variety of colors, including champagne, silver, and pink. Not every style comes in every color of course, but they do have more options than many designers.

I know that Enzoani has some colorful ones too--I know a bride who wore a light blue Enzoani dress!
