Questions for those with out-of-town bridesmaids...

How are you planning to have your bm's order their dresses?  I wanted to tell each of them to go to their local retailer to get the dress and have it altered by a certain date.

I know the ideal way is to order all from the same place so they come from the same dye lo to avoid any color mismatches, however, all but one of my bm's is out of town.  The first time most of them will likely be in will be for my shower in mid August and the wedding is October (not all of them even know if they can come in other than the wedding).

How are you planning to handle?  And do you think the dye lot concern is a "big" concern or just a way for retailers to ensure the sale?

Re: Questions for those with out-of-town bridesmaids...

  • I have three bridesmaids and all three ordered their dresses from different stores, during different months. The dress styles are different (I told them to choose what flatters them most) but I have seen all three dresses and the colors look identical.

I would not worry about the dye lot.
  • I think you are overthinking this. :) The variations between dye lots are really going to be so minuscule that you'd probably have to look with a jeweler's scope to notice any difference. Nobody will pay that much attention.

I used David's for dresses, all I told my girls was the color (lapis) and the length (knee-length), they all bought them from different places (Denver, Alaska, Pennsylvania, Virginia) at different times and it was just fine.
  • I ordered the dresses from a website.  *shrug*

  • Thanks all. I told them to either go to their local retailer or online to get dresses.  It will make life easier for everyone, including me. Those damn salespeople at the bridal store just got into my head  :)))
  • I'm ordering all of their dresses from netbride.  I only have one OOT bridesmaid, and I'll mail her dress to her.  The rest of my bridesmaids can just get their dresses from me.  I wanted to order all the dresses at once so they'd come in at the same time, but I wouldn't worry too much about dyelots.

  • My out of town bridesmaid sent me her measurements and the style number of the dress she wanted since they all picked their own style.  The bridal shop I ordered from will ship her dress to her when it comes in.  This was so we could avoid the dye  lot issue.

  • Two of my bridesmaids live overseas and only one lives in the same state as I do (out of 6 total) so I couldn't even find a designer that was easily found in Japan, Australia, and all across the US!  So, I ordered online: I had my bridesmaids all pick a style and tell me their size for dresses on Ariadress.com and then I ordered them and shipped them to each bridesmaid so they could do alterations if needed.  It worked REALLY well, actually:  The dresses are gorgeous and all fit them beautifully, pretty much exactly true-to-size!  Very high quality for pretty low prices, too!

  • My bridesmaids are wearing black, 2 are friends, 2 are our daughters. I am telling everyone to find a lovely black dress that makes them feel beautiful. I really don't care if they match, and they'll end up with something they can wear again.
  • My one oot bridesmaid ordered hers through the shop where my 2 local bridesmaids ordered theirs from. I had one girl order hers off the internet to save $25. It was a different type of silk and looking back on the photos you could tell, but had it been the same silk the color difference would have been hard to notice I'm sure, since I didn't notice how different her actual dress was until later.

  • I had a friend get her BM dresses in from different stores where the change in the dye lot was pretty noticeable. I had one OOT BM that couldn't come shopping get measured in her hometown and then I gave her measurements to the dress shop and they choose a size for her comparing her measurements to the designers.
