Should my wedding dress size be 2 bigger than what I wear normally?....

Alright, I've read before that wedding dress sizes run small (i.e. if you're a 10 you might wear a 16 etc.), but I still don't feel very good about it.  I paid for a dress yesterday afternoon and was measured as a 6, but in women's sizes wear a 2, or in juniors, a 3.  Does this seem reasonable to other people??

If it seems ridiculous, I don't know what to do besides panic for the next four months waiting for it.  I'm not a busty person but I guess I have a pretty sturdy hip/backside.  Any feedback would be much appreciated!  :)

  • I normally wear a treet size 10 and have to order a 14.  It's just a size, not a big deal.  Try on a dress in a size 6 and if you still think it's going to be too much to alter, order a 4.
  • Agree with the pp. I am a street size 10 and have been trying on 12-14 in dresses!  Who knows why they make them like that!! Don't stress!!

  • I too am the size size is you and I got my maggie in a 10- it had to be altered a little but thats normal
  • Thanks to each of you who replied!  This relieves some worry, though I hope my bust can fill this dress with the help of a good seamstress!
  • sizing standards have changed dramatically in the past 60 years. perhaps wedding dresses have remained more stable than street sizes (my halloween costume this year was from the 1940's was sized as a 16, but i wear a 4-6 in today's sizes!).  i don't think this is any intentional maneuver by wedding gown designers. it's just how the cards fell over the past several decades, likely.
  • As wedding gowns are less mainstream, the sizing just changes more slowly than with everyday items. Garment manufacturers are continually adjusting sizing so that a larger garment will be a smaller size. If a woman wears a 4 in one brand and a 6 in another, she'll go with the brand where she wears a smaller size. It's a clever and sneaky way of marketing. To give you a practical example, I have a vintage size 20 dress form with a 31"  waist. Since wedding gowns aren't everyday garments, and frequently have their own marketing and technical design departments if not their own manufacturers, the sizing hasn't changed at the same rate as with other garments, making them run smaller.
  • these designers also charge for EVERYTHING! there was an extra charge for my dress for "opening up the bust", although i got that for free. apparently wedding dresses by default come with a B cup, and well there was no way i was fitting in that lol. so they charge more for women who have larger boobs as well. they just want to screw you any way then can i think lol
  • it's exactly what jeanieg said. Marilyn Monroe wore a size 12 when she was alive, but she'd probably be an 8 now. my mom wore a size 6 when she was in high school (late 70s) and she wears a 6 now, despite gaining 20 pounds in the 30 years since.

clothing manufacturers started making their clothes bigger (but the numbers the same) to make women feel better about buying clothing. that's why anytime you buy clothing, whether it's a pair of jeans, a shirt, or a wedding gown, you should never look at the size as anything but a rough guideline. instead, you should focus on how your clothing feels and looks on you--the best looking woman is one who feels confident in her body and her clothing, no matter what the number on the clothing tag says.

  • Do you realize how much of an idiot you sound like? You're constantly saying stupid crap here, and then you come over to E and act like you know all this shiit when, clearly, others know more about it than you do (the thesis issue).

Maybe YOU got taken for having to have the bust opened up, but had you maybe gone to a different tailor, you wouldn't have had to spend so much. BTW, I'm a DD and not a damn thing has to be done to my bust. As I said before, they don't charge anything extra for plus sizes, unless it's a really, really big plus size. Dear Lord.

  • Psichick, do you just make stuff up?! Seriously. I got a size 12 (thanks for calling me a plus size, you're a peach) and it wasn't a dime extra for my dress. Andplusalso, I am a C cup, and the bust didn't have to be touched.
