Ivory dress, what about tux and shirt color?

My dress is Ivory, when I put it on fell in love with it and knew it was "the" dress I was not thinking what color will my FH and groomsmen be wearing.   Our colors are purple and pewter.  We walked into a mens wearshouse and just did a quick sampling of what the colors would look like together.  Then the lady asked what color shirts will the men be wearing, i was like "ugh" shirts, color?

Never thought about it, till that very moment.  I want the guys to be in black tuxedos but not sure about what color for the shirts.  HELP please with some advice.  What do I do?

Re: Ivory dress, what about tux and shirt color?

  • I had an ivory dress, so the guys all wore ivory shirts. My H wore an ivory vest and tie to match me, and the groomsmen wore gold vests and ties to match my bridesmaids.

  • Just have the guys wear white.  You won't be able to tell a difference in pictures.

    At all.

And no one will hold up your dress to their shirt to compare. Just trust me on this.

  • Maybe do pewter shirts, with purple ties and flowers?
  • My dress is ivory. The tuxes are all black with ivory shirts. FI will be in a an ivory vest and tie and the groomsmen will be in a red vest and tie.

  • I've seen pictures of ivory dresses with white shirt/vest and I CAN tell the difference. Just do ivory shirts doesn't cost anything different.

  • I agree - I see a definite difference between ivory dresses and white shirts. Ivory shirts are no more expensive than white, just do ivory.
  • Men's Wearhouse has a great vest color called charcoal. That may work for you to tie in the pweter, and maybe do a purple bout.?
  • White shirts - ivory shirts look dingy.
  • It all depends on the color of ivory.  While ivory dresses are frequently just a warmer shade of white, ivory shirts are too often a light yellow.  Rather than trying to match everyone color-wise (remember this is an adult event not prom) choose options that will look best on the individuals.  Adults dress to flatter their figures and coloring, not their best friend!
  • I have an ivory dress but the ivory is almost white.  When we looked at tuxes, the ivory shirts looked way too yellow so my FI is going to wear a white shirt with an ivory vest and an aqua tie.  The groomsmen will be wearing aqua vests and ties.  My FI wanted the aqua tie to tie in with the groomsmen.  I also think he thinks I got one of the AA dresses with aqua in it since I showed it to him a couple times before I went dress shopping so he thinks he'll tie in with my dress as well.  I ended up with a completely different dress so he's definitely going to be surprised when he sees it. :)
