Is satin too heavy for a July wedding?

I'm getting married on July 23, 2011. I've found and tried on a dress I LOVE, but the material is satin. Everyone keeps suggesting to wear a taffeta, chiffon, or organza dress, but when I tried this one on, I fell in love.

(The picture has ruby-colored embroidery, but I'll be wearing the pewter-colored embroidery.)

Do you think it's summer-appropriate? Will I be absolutely miserable?

  • You should wear what you feel most comfortable in...and I mean that in fabric and look/feeling of the dress.  Is the wedding inside or outside?

The dress is gorgeous.  Unless you are being married outside, I wouldn't worry about the weight of the fabric.  You'll be going from air conditioning to air conditioning if it's all indoors.

  • It depends on whether it's poly or silk satin-- silk breathes, polyester doesn't. Poly is never good in the summer. However, it won't matter if you love the dress and aren't getting married somewhere without air conditioning.
  • I think that dress is beautiful....wouldn't you be sad not to wear it? I am getting married next July and my dress is satin. To me the look and feel of the fabric just said "bride" and felt more luxurious. Even if I am hot, I will be confident in what I am wearing. As long as you can find some ways to stay cool, I bet you will feel the same.
  • I personally think us July brides will be hot no matter what . . you might as well wear that you love!!
  • Is there a way that the dress could be made in a lighter-weight fabric? If so, that might be a way to make it work, without being so hot. I agree with the PPs, if you are having everything inside, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. If everything is outside, you may want to reconsider something that would be very hot. If you are like me, short ceremony outside, reception inside, you may be able to make it work! GL
  • I wore a satin gown for my June 26th wedding and I definitely have to say it was very hot! Our ceremony and cocktail hour were both outdoors, and once we moved inside to the reception it was cooler from the air conditioning, but I got really hot again while we were dancing. I wish I had gone with a lighter fabric, but I absolutely loved my gown, so I don't know if I would have gone down a different path or not when choosing my dress.
  • Oh btw.. the gown you love is gorgeous! You should be fine since your whole wedding will be indoors, just stay hydrated and make sure you eat all day. I didn't eat much so I ended up feeling sick right before the ceremony.
  • I got married in SC last May we had a outdoor ceremony, and 3 hour photo shoot(also outdoors). And my dress was Taffeta, I was still sweating.

So I agree with PP's go with what you love. Because in the end you need to be happy with your dress. If you're comfortable knowing you may get a little hot, and are willing to sacrifice for the dress go for it.

  • I agree - go with what you love and feel comfortable in.  That dress is beautiful!
  • Thanks everyone! I love it, too, but I keep hearing/reading that satin will be miserable.

Both the ceremony and reception will be indoors, and pictures will be outdoors (weather permitting).

I've been to 7 stores and tried on dozens of dresses, all with the same summery look. On a whim, I grabbed this one off the rack and I thought it was perfect. My mom and I were shocked that I liked this one so much since it didn't have anything that I had been looking for.

But as soon as I tried it on, I felt like a *bride* for the first time. That's a feeling that's hard to ignore. :)
