Alterations Pricing?

For those of you ladies who have gone in for your first fittings, how much was your estimate for alterations?  Do you live in a big city or rural area and what did you have done?

I'm currently living in a bigger city and am debating whether or not to do my alterations here or in the small town where I'm getting married.  Lots of other things have been cheaper in the small town, I'm just wondering if it would be worth the hassle to travel and do it there.

If you have specific suggestions, my dress is in my sig. its alfred angelo style 2034, except I have a button closure instead of the lace up back and it fits pretty well, I just need to make it a little more snug and get a bustle done.

Re: Alterations Pricing?

  • I live in the Cleveland area, and asked my local boards for recommendations. I went with a small consignment shop. For a hem, and 13 point bustle it was $125.00.

Check you local or surrounding area boards. Good Luck.

  • I would go where they do the best work.

I got fairly lucky in terms of alterations pricing... the shoppe where I bought my gown offers all necessary alterations (including any hand-beadwork, take in/let out, altering necklines/etc. etc. etc. as well as having the dress cleaned and pressed before your big day) for about $150. So, that's all I'm paying. I'm having it taken in all over (waist, hips, bum, chest, etc.) a bit, as well as having the hemline shortened, a seam repaired that apparently someone ripped out on accident, beadwork re-done around the hips (i didn't like how it laid), bustle added, cups sewn in, and the modesty panel re-done for the lace-up back (I didn't like the one that was in the gown).

This is a smaller boutique, carries higher-end gowns, but it is also in a relatively rural area (Nebraska).

  • I got my alterations done at the bridal shop where I purchased by dress in central Ohio. We live out of state and I didn't want to drag it down here to Georiga and then back up for the wedding. My alterations and bustle were $350. I believe the bustle was $75 of it.

I realize I could have gotten them done cheaper elsewhere, but I had get my fitting when I was in town for my shower in April (got married in June) and didn't have time to get estimates and run all over town to get the best price. Plus, I figured if he screwed it up, then it would be his fault and they couldn't say well we can't do anything about it bc you didn't get the alterations done here kinda thing.
  • I paid $180 at a David's Bridal in a small city/large town in Connecticut. I got it taken in through the torso, the clip on the back of the neck (haltar top) adjusted, a bustle and a hem. They refused to give me a quote before I got there for the alterations (grrr) but it turned out to be what I considered reasonable (I was worried I'd pay more for alterations than I did for the $250 dress).

They charged piecemeal (sp?) based on what was done. The hem alone was $95. The taking-in was charged per side (left/right - as if one is ever done without the other?), and then the bustle cost a certain amount.
