wedding dress fiascohelp please!

I tried on a gorgeous dress, and it is a discontinued Maggie Sottero. The girl working at the store told me I could put 50 to hold itand if I found another dress I could switch. I found a different dress and now they wont let me switch dresses. That there is a 200 reshelfing fee, and that is something I can't afford to lose 200. So the strapless Maggie Sottero dress is a size 8 and I am about a size 0. I have pictures of the dress..so is it possible to get the dress taken in from a size 8 to a size 0 since I'm stuck with that dress? And would it be possible to add a lace accent since that is what I love about the other dress?

Re: wedding dress fiascohelp please!

  • A good seamstress should be able to take that in no problem. Again, a good seamstress should be able to add lace accents as well.

Call around seamstresses in the area and show them a picture of the dress with the lace and see if they can do something similar.

Also- Do you have it in writing anywhere that the shop told you that you could switch dresses if you wanted to? If you do, I would show it to them and they should let you switch if you have your heart set on the one they won't let you switch to.

  • Adding the lace accent should be no problem.  Generally, a rule of thumb is that a seamstress can take in a dress about 2 sizes or so before the shape and structure of the dress starts to get compromised (not true for all dresses, of course).  I would take the picture to a few seamstresses and see what they say.

  • You are safe with 2 sizes. But an 8 to a 0 could be a stretch ... you'd have to talk to a seamstress.  And with alterations like that, you may end up paying more for alterations than if you just lose the $200.00 restocking fee.

Ditto PP. Do you have in writing that they would let you exchange it?

  • WOW!  I second the thought that if you have it in writing challenge that because tha seems wrong.

I had the same issue where I purchased my dress, only it was for my daughter in law...she purchased her initial gown at this store in a size 12 because she was pregnant and wanted to accomodate for her growing belly.

Well....she m/c :( and being a size 2/4 didn't want the dress anymore because of needing that much altering plus the memories etc.  The store wouldn't let her have a refund OR an exchange...the only thing we were allowed to do was finish paying for the dress then privately sell it. They ended up calling me because I had her old cell phone #, and I read them the riot act!  I know a lot of stores are adopting these policies because of worrying about people wearing the dress then returning it, but not even for store credit towards another in the store?

And in your case...you didn't take the dress out of the store.
I would raise a racket get my $ put towards another dress or a refund.

  • I would dispute this with the credit card company, and you may very well win that money back; it will cost the store more time in money and bad reputation if they don't work with you on this.
Good luck and don't back down, also don't forget the local television stations to do a story on that.

[QUOTE]They have your $50, but they don't have your $200, right? So unless it states on the receipt that there is a $200 restocking fee, I don't see how they could charge you for it. If they have your card number and tried, you could probably dispute the charge with your CC company. Double check the receipt, store website, etc. for anything with this policy.

The thing is, wedding gowns aren't massed produced (unless you are using David's Bridal). That's why they take 3-6 months to arrive after your order.    So, it's not like returning a dress to JCPenney.    They don't order the dress until you order it. Then, they order it from the designer. Who may or may not already have one in process. The point is, just because you change your mind, doesn't mean the salon can cancel your order once it is in place.  Wedding gowns don't work like that.

  • with this dress, i don't have to order it. the size they have, which is a size 8, is the only one of that dress that they have available since it is discontinued.

So, do you already have the dress in your possession?  Did you give them 50% or $50?  </div>
