dress size and alterations

How many dress sizes can you take a dress in. I need to order my dress soon for my october wedding yet i want to loose weight. i've heard the rule of thumb is 2 dress sizes. does this mean if i get a size 12 I can get down to an 8 or only to a 10.

i am in the same situation...thats why i went with a lace up back the dress is the current size i am but has a good amount of shrinking space.
