Bridesmaid dresses

Would it be too weird if my bridesmaids had different dresses but in the same color??? my friends all live either out of state/out of town/ and it will be super hard to get matching dresses for all of them.... any ideas or suggestions? thanks.

Re: Bridesmaid dresses

  • Not weird at all. A lot of brides choose to pick the color and maybe the length and then let their BMs pick a dress style that flatters them.

  • Lots of people do what you're thinking about, but if you tell them "red" or "orange" or "navy blue" there's a good chance they're each going to show up at your wedding in a completely different shade.  (And if you're ok with that, great!)

But there are lots of chain stores such as David's or Alfred Angelo where you can pick out a specific color (like David's apple red) then all your girls can find a local store and pick out a dress in that color.   Ditto PP about giving them length guidelines.

I had a bridesmaid in VA, one in MD, and one in Las Vegas, and never once did we all go into a store together.  And they ultimately decided on a matching dress, so it can be done.

  • i LOVE that idea and I am considering doing that for my wedding as well!  I think it gives the girls their own personality!

  • I just told my girls to wear black.  Looked great.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

Also, a lot of places recommend ordering them all together so the material batch all matches.  Sometimes when they dye the material you can tell that they are from different batches because they don't all match exactly.

Dye lots are controlled by computer these days.  It's very rare that any differences will be detectable to the naked eye even from close range.  Bridal shops perpetuate this myth because they don't want you to take your business elsewhere.

  • I'm doing the same thing for my wedding.  I wanted my girls to feel comfortable in their own dress - just gave them a particular color.  I am, however, running into a problem... I failed to mention a length.  My maid of honor (and sister-in-law) has chosen a long dress, but a bridesmaid wants a short dress.  I'm at a loss..

I do not want to take back my offer of "choose the dress you like," but I'm afraid different lengths will not look very nice.  Has anyone had different lengths??
