Glasses or contacts??

Hi ladies,

I'm new to this board, but I hang out at a bunch of other boards so I'm sure you've seen me around.

I'm getting married in September and I'm really debating over getting contacts for the wedding. Background: I've been wearing glasses for over 10 years and they are really part of how I see myself. I feel like something is missing from my face when I see myself without them. I am also really freaked out about touching my eyes and inserting contacts.

Big issue: Pictures!! I had some boudoir pics done last year and I wore my glasses for some and not for others. All the pics I ended up liking were without my glasses. Some of the glasses ones had glare and just didn't look right. I'm worried about glasses glare ruining my wedding pictures if I wear them, especially since my pics will be taken outside in the afternoon.

Thoughts? If you wore glasses, how did your pics turn out?

Re: Glasses or contacts??

  • This is totally and completely up to you, but honestly I'd say that you might want to consider getting contacts NOW and alternating days wearing glasses versus wearing contacts. I've been a contacts/glasses wearer for about 10 years and I prefer my contacts. I will be wearing my contacts for the wedding to avoid glasses glare (as you said you were concerned about).

Try getting contacts now and wearing them now so you can decide whether or not you like them. Trust me, it is kinda weird putting something in your eye, but after about a week you will get used to it.

  • I agree. I have worn glasses and contacts for over 20 years, and I prefer myself in my contacts. You look good and like yourself in your glasses, but if you are worried about the glare, contacts would certainly solve that. If you get contacts now, you have more time to get used to them and to decide what you want to do for the wedding day.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I've had contacts for 8 or 9 years. At first I didn't think that I would be able to put them in and take them out. I got used to it easily and it really isn't as bad as I thought.

Definitely don't wait to try contacts right before. Try them now and you'll be able to make a decision based on which one you are more comfortable in.

  • I wear contacts most days and glasses the rest of the time, and have for over 10 years. Defintely start getting used to contacts now if you are interested in wearing them for the wedding. It takes a bit of time to get used to.
  • I wear contacts and glasses also.  I wore contacts on my wedding day, since I prefer myself in contacts.  You should definitely try out contacts now--they can take a few weeks to get used to.  I went about a year without wearing contacts (turns out saline solution doesn't sterilize my contacts enough, so now I use a hydrogen peroxide-based solution), and when I started wearing them again, I found that they made me a bit dizzy for the first couple of days.

Have you had your makeup trial yet?  I would probably try to decide what you want to do by then, so you can choose your makeup accordingly.

  • Contacts!!!  I wear glasses because I enjoy the convenience of taking them off quickly but for important events, like my big day, I shall be wearing contacts.
  • Thanks ladies, I knew i didn't want to leave too long that's why I was asking now. Time to make an optometrist appt!

  • I've been wearing glasses since I was 4 (I'm 24 now). So they are a part of me. I did try wearing contacts when I was in my teens, but every day I wore my contacts instead of glasses, I found myself trying to push "phantom" glasses up my nose. I felt foolish. Plus the contacts made my eyes feel tired when I took them out. So for my wedding, I'm opting to wear my glasses, since they're me. It does come down to personal preference though.

  • Completely your preference. I wear glasses and have contacts too. It took me a looong time (about 1.5 months) to find a contact and a solution that worked for me - I'm allergic to something in most of them. It also took awhile to get used to them. I love my glasses, but I also love my contacts. I'll be wearing contacts for my wedding. If you decide on glasses instead, do yours have the glare-free coating on them? Mine do so when they're in pictures they tend to not have a glare. It can be pricey to get it done though if your insurance doesn't cover it.
  • Another glasses/contacts wearer here. I was really scared to try contacts for the first time, but I love them! I do have some advice, though:

    1. You should always put your contacts in before you start your makeup and take them out before you take your makeup off. This can sometimes mean that, if someone else is doing your makeup and goes too hard on your eyelid, your contact might move around or get uncomfortable. If you're having a makeup artist, make sure s/he knows that you're wearing contacts!

    2. Keep contact eyedrops with you. At the very least, just do it at first. Different people have different levels of eye dryness. My cousin and I both wear contacts, and I keep drops with me, but she never does. Everyone's got different eyes!

    3. Get them ASAP so you can get used to putting them in and taking them out! Costco did my fitting and it was a breeze (plus, it was a whole lot cheaper than having my eye doctor teach me how to put them in and take them out).
  • Agreed with what everyone else is saying...Ive been wearing contacts for almost 10 years and glasses all my life, I alternate between them now but def I prefer my contacts. It did take me a while to get used to wearing contacts and getting them in/out easily so def glad you are thinking of getting them sooner as opposed to later!

  • Thank you all for your input, I think I'll talk to my optometrist about trying them for the next few months to see how I feel about it. I'll let you know what happens!

  • Congrats on your upcoming wedding! I'm an optometrist, so just thought I would throw in my two cents worth since your post caught my eye. I definitely agree with the other posts about getting a fitting now so you can get used to the way you look long before your wedding. Who knows, you may love them and end up being a fulltime contact lens wearer. Also, make sure you are comfortable with the doctor who does the exam, but also their staff. It will be their support staff that train you in inserting and removing the lenses, teaching you about lens care, etc. Don't be afraid to ask questions during the appointment. They want to make sure you are comfortable before you go home with them. It goes without saying, but it amazes me the way patients abuse CL's, always follow your doctors instructions with regard to replacement schedules and hygiene. Good luck with it. I hope it works out great for you.
  • I have worn glasses since I was 12 and started wearing contacts at 16 (and am 34 now). I wore my contacts full-time until about a year ago. My eyes started hurting whenever I would wear them. I tried several different brands and solutions, but nothing felt comfortable anymore. I've been wearing my glasses full-time now for about a year, but I still prefer not to wear them for pictures. My plan is to go to the eye doctor before we have our engagement pictures done and see about getting some daily contacts just for special days when I don't feel like wearing my glasses. I have other friends who do this, and it has worked well for them.
