Ordering dress without trying it on

I have found a beautiful dress that I love the look of. The only thing is that I can't try it on, I would have to order it as a custom order. I have tried on and looked at dresses and still cannot find one that I like more than this one. Is there anyone else that has done this before? I am usually pretty good at dressing my body and picking out clothes/dresses before trying them on. I can normally look at something and know if it is going to fit me or not. Usually I have no doubts about it but with such a big purchase and gamble I am having doubts. I just can't get this dress out of my head and I compare every other dress to it. Advice please!!!

Re: Ordering dress without trying it on

  • Probably not a good idea.  I fell in love with at least two different dresses just from the pictures.  One wasn't flattering due to the construction of the dress, the other simply didn't look as nice in person.  I ended up with a dress with the same cut as both, the same neckline as one, and similar details to both, but the end result just worked much better on me.

It's a pretty big gamble, and if you don't like the end result, chances are you'll have no way of returning or exchanging the dress.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I think that once you have tried on dresses and know what shapes and cuts work for you then a special order is ok. I would also say that if you have tried on dresses by that designer and know how those dresses fit you it would probably be ok. I don't know that I would personally special order a dress without those two criteria.
  • The gamble is the issue I am having.... I have tried on dresses from the designer so I know that this designer works well with my body. I just can't find any dress that I love as much as this one. It's an older dress so they don't have it in any stores but it can still be ordered. Every time I try a different dress on I compare it to the other dress. It has every feature that I want and I haven't found anything like it that I can settle on.
  • Ditto aerin. Most of them aren't returnable, so you would be stuck with trying to sell it. I think wedding dress shopping is something that you just have to go and do and try things on. It is fine to know what you think you might wany, but like pp said, sometimes they just aren't flattering, don't fit right, etc.
  • i guess it comes down to how much confidence you have in your sales person and their knowledge of the designer and your body type. Hard decision....
  • Well I have tried on several dresses that are the same style, cut, fit and several dresses that are from that designer. I know the style of the dress works well with my body and that the designer's dresses fit me well also. Its a mermaid, sweetheart neckline, lace up back. I am just wary with the risk of it. I'm not a gambler and am pretty risk-adverse. I am about 95% sure that I am going to love the dress as much as I do in the picture on me. I guess I am just looking for some reassurance that others have done this before and felt good about the end result.
  • spechtholdn, if you KNOW it's your dress, go for it. You're only going to keep comparing other dresses to this one since you say you can't get it out of your head. I was in the exact same position as you and took the risk. I'll post in two weeks or so when it comes in whether it was a good decision or not! I also tried on a similar dress by the same designer, and had tried multiple others of the same silhouette.  I just knew it was my dress.

All pp's have valid points on being stuck with the dress, so I would say weigh the pros and cons and go with your gut!!! Keep an eye out for a [hopefully great] post in a couple of weeks about mine coming in! GL!

I tried on some dresses at David's Bridal and they were nice but did not blow me away.  I was contented with the idea I would probably not love my dress. Until I saw......

I love love love this dress.  I spoke with them until I felt comfortable that they would fit it to me (I am 5'1").  It should ship in 10 weeks or so.  Though I know I will have to have a final fitting with a professional seamstress in my area.

Talk to their customer service people.  See what they think.

Honestly, go for it.  It sounds as if you are reasonably sure about the designer and style.  If this is the dress you judge all others by then you would probably regret NOT getting it.
