Alterations- Fit and Flare (different sized hips than rest of body)

I bought my gown this past weekend- so excited!! It's a fit and flare, I wore a size six at the appointment- it zipped, but definitely VERY tight in the hips (my hips are famous for being larger than the rest of me lol) and I couldn't even really sit in it.  However it fit perfect in the waist and bust.  My consultant suggested I buy a size 8, I obviously need to sit at my wedding!  However, now I'm getting nervous about whether they will be successful in altering the dress to still be very form-fitting on me (as it's suppose to be)- especially if I lose a little bit of weight before the wedding.  My body normally fluctuates between 15 pounds, always being the heaviest in the winter and we're getting married at the end of August- when I tend to be my smallest.

I guess I'm just looking for any brides out there that have been here, done that to give me a little reassurance.

Re: Alterations- Fit and Flare (different sized hips than rest of body)

  • Stop stressing.  You had to buy a dress that fit the biggest part of your body, which I am guessing are your hips.  Dresses are never cut perfectly right off the rack so adjustments need to be made.  Just find yourself a great seamstress and let them know your concerns.  I am sure they will tell you that everything will be fine and that they can make it look as amazing as it did the first time you tried it on.

At least you took your consultants suggestion and ordered the size 8.  Some brides don't listen and are then stuck with a dress that needs to be taken out which is a lot harder then taking a dress in.

  • Don't worry about it.  You'll want to start getting your dress altered in May-ish.  Your last fitting will likely be pretty close to the wedding, so even if your weight fluctuates between now and then, they'll be fitting the body you'll have over the summer, not now.  A good seamstress will have no problem making your dress fit like a glove.
