Running out of time?!

We got engaged New Year's Day of this year...wedding is set for August 31 of this year, which left us just under 8 months to plan. I know we are probably a little insane, but we really didn't want to wait all the way until next summer. We haven't hit too many roadblocks but I am starting to freak out because it's almost 7 months away now and I don't have my dress!! I went to 2 salons, narrowed it down to 1 dress at the first one I liked, 2nd salon didn't like any. I have 2 appointments coming up....I know I'm running out of time but I'm worried I'm going to have to settle for one I just like. I liked that one a lot, I just keep thinking that maybe there's another one out there I would like even more.

  • There will ALWAYS be more!  This goes for everything!  I would say that you need to get your dress ordered before the 6 month mark.  But as a general rule, once you decide on something don't look back.  You'll drive yourself crazy otherwise.

You are running out of time for many designers.  At this point, you can rule out most Maggie Sottero dresses. They typically run 5-8 months, so you would be cutting it very close and have zero time for alterations.  Many other designers will run 3-4 months, give or take.    Davids Bridal can often get a dress in about 6-10 weeks, so you have plenty of time if you are considering David's Bridal dresses.

Get to your other two appointments, and find a dress that you love. If you have to, make it a marathon weekend and try on dozens of dresses. Be open to different styles. Try on dresses you didn't think you would consider.  Take pictures if the salon will let you.  And, then, select a dress.  And when you do, stop looking.  Immediately.  Designers are constantly coming out with new designs, and there WILL be another dress that turns your head.  But, you have to stop looking, or like PP said, you will make yourself insane.

No you're not running out of time! Among my friends, it's very common to have rather short engagements: 6 8 months is pretty common. Certainly less than a year. My engagement was 7 months and I ordered the dress about 5 months out. I have friends who went to David's and got dresses in plenty of time. Yes, you should find something soon but you still have time to find something beautiful!
  • We got engaged at just over 6 months from the date we chose, so I was freaking out too. I wound up finding my dream dress which was discontinued, so I got a great discount, and it was mine that day instead of having to wait for it to come in. I would definitely recommend giving discontinued dresses a shot.

Otherwise, just make sure you know which designers are out when you go to your appointments so you aren't tempted to order one that could result in another freak-out if it gets close to your wedding day and it isn't in yet.
  • If your still unsure if what type you like I downloaded the theknot's look book app and it helped me a lot you can put in all different styles to search or search by body type. It found me my dress. I got a Maggie Sottero so like above they told me 6 months to get mine in so i have to wait till April also getting married in August. I got it at a trunk show. Good luck, what I thought I liked in the beginning was not what I ended up with but I know I made the right choice. Hope you find it soon!

  • Also keep in mind that you can rush order many dresses (it'll cost you though).  I ordered my dress in May and it came in Dec so 7 months.  Mine was custom made though (the designer changed the shape of my dress just for me).
  • 7-8 months is PLENTY of time to plan a wedding, but it  does rule out a few designers as far as gown shopping goes.
David's Bridal usually gets dresses in within 3 months so you're pretty safe there. YOu can also buy from places like JCrew, Macys, Nordstrom, etc that will come in with plenty of time.
I bought my gown 3 weeks before my wedding at a bridal outlet.
  • Thanks guys!! I feel a little bit better :) Dress shopping this weekend and determined to have this all done mid Feb!! I agree with the stop looking afterwards...I am such an indecisive person and I couldn't imagaine picking this dress out over a year in advance! I would probably change my mind a ton!
