Wedding band size dilema

My fiance got his wedding band but he has a sizing dilema. His knuckle is bigger than the base of his finger where the ring sits. Therefore, it is tough to get on and off but loose and spins around when he wears it. Anyone have this problem before....any suggestions? Thanks!!

Re: Wedding band size dilema

  • They make inserts for arthritics that pop out but they're expensive. Depending on the ring you can actually have it jointed too if you havent already purchased.

We actually purposefully are ordering my E-ring and my wedding band 3/4 size big. We know that the E-ring will be top heavy but I'm ok with that. I already wear a birthstone ring this size on my left hand thats stones are smaller and the twisting isnt too annoying for me. However having a condition that makes my hands swell out of no where means I'm more worried about the ring being too small when this happens and impacting the swelling. I actually talked to my specialist about this when I went in last time and he advised staying with the same ring size I was already wearing because 80% of the time I can get it off when my hands swell the rest of the time it leave just enough for the swelling to go down on it own. We thought this ring was about 1/2 size big we found out its actually about 3/4 to 1 size big.

So its all about personal preference. How much does it bother him?

  • DH has the same problem. It's a bit loose on him but I think if we went down another size we'd never get it past his knuckle. His ring is an 8, mine is a 7 but made a bit small, he cant get my ring past his first knuckle. It doesn't bother him at all though.

  • My FI has the same issues due to a boxers fracture that destroyed his ring finger...we have been to several jewlers and they do have the ability to put "beads" on the inside of the ring to stop that movement.  They also make ring guards for women's rings so I would guess they make the same for mens....

  • Depending what else the jeweler can do, it might just be a matter of finding a happy median where he can get it over his knuckle but it doesn't spin around quite so much at the base of his finger.  Assuming the ring was aquired recently, let him have it on his finger for a while and wear it during different weather conditions (since the ring is going to stick more on hot muggy days and slide around more on cold dry days) and then the jeweler can re-size it depending how he thinks it feels.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I have rheumatoid arthritis, which makes my knuckles swell as well.  My band will be the larger size and on days when it's loose, I'm using a cheapie $3 ring protector that I got at Claire's.  Not sure if it's the classiest way to go, but I have yet to find a jewelry store that can put a hinge on a ring.  They all look at me like my head is on backwards.  Undecided

  • Ring guards are a temporary solution.

A permanent solution would be "sizing beads" or "speed bumps."  A jeweler will solder in small "bumps" of metal in the inside of the ring.  It still allows for him to get it on over the knuckle but it takes up some room and prevents it from spinning too much. This is a good fix for silver, gold or platinum bands.
  • My wasband has the same issue, Thin fingers and big knuckles. We did the sizing beads and it worked like a charm.
