I once knew a girl who was on a shoe string budget and when it came to her wedding gown....she considered buying a bridesmaids dress in white.  At the time, I remember thinking it seemed sad somehow....and a bit lame. 

Now however- I'm planning my own wedding.  Granted, our budget isn't as tight as hers was...but it is tight.  This idea crossed my mind again when I was looking at some bm gowns at a local boutique.  There was one that had every element I'm looking for in a wedding gown.....and it was $250- a lot for a BM dress, but considerably inexpensive for a wedding gown.

Would you ever, ever, ever consider this?

i think it's totally fine to buy a bridesmaid dress in white! i mean it's okay to wear whatever you want : ) my sister bought a long white dress for a couple of hundred dollars off the rack at bcbg for her casual wedding and it looked great.

It's a moot point now, but sure, I'd consider it. For example, what the heck is the difference between these two dresses except the price? I do find it sneaky that the bridesmaid version doesn't come in white!

I would if I found one I loved. A girl I used to work with did that and she looked great in it. Not to mention it was only a few hundred dollars instead of thousands.

I think it's crazy to pay thousands of dollars on a dress just because it's called a "bridal gown."

i looked at bridesmaids dresses, I looked at prom dresses, at the end of the day a wedding dress is just a dress that happens to by white and costs 3X more because it's got the word wedding in front of it instead of the word formal or prom. some of the dresses I liked during my search I found at

A friend of mine got a Vera Wang BM dress in ivory for her wedding - no one knew the difference. And it was certainly much more affordable than the gowns!

I was going to do that to have a second dress to change into, for the end of the reception.

absolutely! If you love the dress - go for it!  I'm looking at some BM (and even prom) dresses myself.  There are a lot of beautiful wedding gowns - but they are not what I'm looking for.  I want something simple, without a train, so a BM dress would be perfect for me.  I agree with a PP - if you are wearing it, at your wedding, it's a wedding dress  :-)
