Dress Sizes?

My wedding isn't until January 2013, however, my Maid of Honour (my little sister) lives on the other side of the country and was down for Christmas so we went looking at dresses for me, her and my mother as she wanted to be able to see my in my potential dress.

I wound up finding a dress, funny enough the FIRST dress I tried on, and I knew the minute I put it on.  I went to another bridal store to try it on in something closer to my size, as the original store only had it in a size 6 so I was rather shoved into it.  The size 10 at the second store seemed to fit quite well and the lady suggested that would probably be the size I would need to order.

My question is though, is that I've put on weight the last year due to a hectic work schedule plus taking night classes and therefore spending all my free time sitting at a desk writing papers.  School will be done in April at which point I am hoping to be working out heavily again and eating well and was hoping to loose 20/30 lbs before the wedding date.

So I'm hesitant to order the dress right now.  How much weight can a person loose before they have to go down a dress size?  I realize its more to do with inches, but I tend to loose them fairly proportionally when I start loosing weight.  30 lbs might be a stretch to loose, but I am fairly confident I can loose 15-20lbs.  Is that enough to drop me to a size 8?  Or would it not even matter?

I'm 5'7 and currently 158lbs if that helps.  And this is the dress:  http://www.theknot.com/wedding-dress/maggie-sottero/priscilla?src=par

Re: Dress Sizes?

  • Order the size that fits you now.  A lot of brides "plan" on losing weight before their wedding and order a size smaller then what they should...but then the day gets closer and then they are franticly trying to get it altered or are just shoved into a too tight, poorly fitting dress.

I would order the size that fits you now and if you do lose weight you can easily get it taken in.

  • Order the 10.  Its fits you now, plus its a Maggie so it's a corset back so you will be able to tie it tighter should you lose the weight you want.

  • I am in agreement with Ash. Order your dress that fits your largest measurement. Or to be sure you could always (and i know it can be frustrating) wait until November/December to get your dress. If you wait then you wont have to worry about keeping it "hidden" or keeping something from happening to it. :)

BAD ADVICE!  I had a Maggie - you will need to order no later than 6 months before the wedding (maybe as soon as 8 months before).  Order what fits you now - not where you plan/hope to be for the wedding

[QUOTE]Order the dress that fits your largest measurement area at the time you order.  That is the best advice I got when dress shopping and what I did. It's much easier for a seamstress to take a dress in than to let it out if you don't lose weight. You may lose a bunch of weight, but WHERE you lose it matters.  You can lose weight but you can't change your bone structure. I could lose 15 pounds, but my hip bones are not going anywhere.  KWIM?

I agree, order the size that will fit you now.   I just went for my first fitting, and am RELIEVED that it fits me (I'm the same size I was when I was measured, but still...)

I can't tell you how much less stressed I am knowing that I don't need to lose a pound between now and my wedding to fit into my dress.  If I happen to lose 5-10, it shouldn't be a big deal because of how my dress fits.  I would hate to have the stress of knowing that I would NEED to lose 5-10 pounds just to get the zipper up, KWIM?

If you lose weight between when you order and your first fitting, it can be taken in a little bit.  It's MUCH harder to let a dress out.

Edited to add:  Keep in mind that the size 10 you tried on has been worn by lots of people trying on dresses and has stretched a little bit.  Definitely have your seamstress measure and check the size charts.   I tried on a size 10 that fit like a glove, and we ended up ordering a 12 (needs to be taken in a bit, but the 10 would have been WAY too small).  So don't freak out if she tells you to order a 12 even though the 10 you tried on fit perfectly.

I probably wouldn't wait this long becuase it can take months for a dress to come in. For a January 2013 wedding I'd order by May 2012 at the latest. If you can buy a dress off the rack and then have it altered it's fine to wait but most people end up ordering their gown.

And like others have said, I'd order the size that fits at the time you purchase your dress. They can always be taken in and it's not a big deal to alter a dress 1 or 2 sizes down.

  • Ok great thanks ladies :)  I just didn't want the corset back to wind up being done up so the sides were practically touching if I did loose the weight, but I agree, there's no guarentee i will loose any and I don't wanna be one of those brides obsessing over it.  But I dont want to have a huge dress issue either!  So i'll go and get measured and order the dress in the size I need now, my hips is what requires me to be a 10 (they are 10 inches bigger than my waist!) so even if i loose weight, there's only so much that will be lost on my hips ;)

    Thanks again!
  • I agree with the other ladies. Order to your largest measurement. I had a 2 in the bust, a 4 in the waist and a 6 in the hips. So I ordered the 6 because it'll be much easier for my seamstress to take in the bust and waist a bit then to let out at the hips. My dress is a Maggie and it came in today after I ordered it in June. I lost about 10 lbs since I ordered the dress but the size I originally ordered fit almost perfectly because of the corset. They can really tie the corset up tight or loose if you need it to be.
