Party Shirts for Groomsmen?

Hi ladies!! I was hoping to get your opinons on something... my fiance went to a wedding where all the groomsmen wore "Party Shirts" so that they looked like they were wearing a regular dress shirt for the ceremony, but then once they took their jackets off for the reception, they had a fun, crazy pattern on the arms and back of the shirt. He loved the idea so much that he wants to do it for our wedding, but I'm just a little skeptical. You can take a look at them at their online store at www.thepartyshirtstore.com. What do you all think? Fun??

Any and all thoughts would help!! Thank you!

  • If you are a forum troll, I'm afraid I've taken your bait. However, I'd rather fall prey to you than allow this heresy to pass. If you're not a troll, then I offer this:

Be skeptical. Be very skeptical. In fact, be a pessimist.

These are the most horrendous shirts I've ever seen- and I've seen some terrible stuff. I'm begging you to convince your Groom out of choosing them. Please, for the love of all things sartorial: STAY AWAY FROM THESE SHIRTS.

A "fun" shirt does not a "fun" man make. Your Gents will be ridiculed if they wear these. I'd much prefer unremarkable (or even daresay "dapper") attire over silly gimmicks.

  • I'm curious - what do these look like?

  • I'm in the Air Force, and "party shirts" like this are pretty common for our formal functions.  With uniform jackets on, everything looks all nice and...well...uniform, and after dinner when the dancing starts and jackets come off, it's a fun way for the guys to show some of their personality instead of being...well....uniform.    I guess it's just a little bit of non-conformism.

I've only seen "party shirts" at military weddings.    A good seamstress can probably make these for you -- you'd have to buy the dress shirts and the "party" fabric (don't know how much you'd need, but probably about 2-2.5 yards per shirt?).

  • I wouldn't suggest doing this.

My SIL did something kinda fun - her groom and groomsmen wore black tuxes with black shirts and hot pink ties, and when they took their jackets off - they had white suspenders.  It's still somewhat formal but kind of a fun surprise.  Looked cool in pictures.

I'd suggest that or some other way to have fun.  The party shirts kinda look ridiculous.

  • Wow! Thanks for the feedback! I do want to say though that my fiance saw these shirts up close and they're definitely not cheap looking. He said with the jacket on, you really can't tell the difference between these shirts and any other great quality dress shirt. I know the price is high, but to go out and find a seamstress, get measurements for all the groomsmen and order fabric... it just seems like this is such a time saver and quality is guaranteed! Also, I would imagine the guys would want to wear these again to work events or other weddings.

I think I might just go for it. I want our wedding to be casual and fun. Thanks, everybody!

  • Sorry I can't get past the $150 a shirt price.

<div>I should have been more specific.  You wouldn't have to get the groomsmen measured.  Just buy plain white dress shirts that already fit them.  The seamstress will take the seams out, then replace the white fabric on the back and sides using the  "party" fabric (with the white fabric pieces as a pattern).    If you live close to a military base, I would try sewing shops near the base.  They can probably do this for about $30-50  if you supply the white shirt and extra colored fabric.  </div>

  • Thanks for clarifying! I hear what you're saying, but I'm thinking once you buy the shirt and the fabric and then pay up to $50 for the seamstress, you're probably looking at close to $150 anyway! I don't know... I guess I should look into it more. I just love the idea of just easy ordering. I saw another site that does it and they were $199!! Thanks again everybody!

They can get a JC Penney Shirt for $19.99.  And a yard of fabric will run about $5.  Even if you spend $50 on a seamstress, that does not equal $150.

I think they're hideous.  I feel sorry for your groomsmen.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • I feel like your fiance should talk this over with the groomsmen. What do they think of them? Do they want to wear them?
