Too casual?

I'm having an outdoor fall wedding October of next year. I'm doing a fall theme- pumpkins, wheat, orange, amber ect. Very rustic, romantic, unique and rich. I've been checking out bridesmaid dresses and I know I don't want long dresses (due to being an uncomfortable bridesmaid in the past) and I'm not in love with many of the styles that are out there. I came across a lovely, knit, orange, above the knee, short sleeved dress from Anthropologie. I tried it on with one bridesmaid and we both loved it. However I told my MOH to check it out online and she pretty much hates it. She thinks its not a 'bridesmaid' dress, that it looks like an old lady dress and that its too casual. I know its my day and about what I like and want BUT I'm having issues with it being too casual (my fiance mentioned the same thing when he first saw it). All the men will be in suits and I'm wearing a long dress. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks ladies!

Here is the dress for reference....

Re: Too casual?

  • It is NMS and I don't particularly like the color.

There is nothing wrong with having different BM's in different styles of dresses. But I would encourage you to keep looking before you decide for sure. Also, your wedding isn't for almost another year, so I wouldn't get your heart set on something too early as styles and colors even change depending on the designer, etc.

It's not just about your opinion when you pick out the BM dresses. I mean, you do get a significant say, but considering 1) she would be paying $150 for this dress 2) she obviously would never wear it again, and 3) you and your FI aren't sure about it because it may be too casual. And to be brutally honest, I don't know too many girls that dress in that color would flatter. Plus, in general, $150 for a knit dress is a lot.
  • It does look a little casual, but if you're wedding is casual that is OK. Because the men are wearing suits I think you might be better off with something a little bit dressier. That being said, if you DO decide to stick with it let your BMs wear and your MOH can wear something else.

  • it depends on how casual your wedding is.
why not let them all just pick an orange dress of their choice...kinda like this:

  • I think the dress cut is fine, but I know that orange is like yellow-- very few actually look good in it. What about a red dress, since that fits the fall theme? Plus, a girl can wear a red dress again, not so much on the ornage-- and 150 for knit is kinda nuts

  • If your MOH hates it, it's time to keep looking or to let them choose their own dresses. She's the one who's going to have to pay for and wear the dress.

Also, I know you said you don't want long dresses, but you're getting married in Detroit at the end of October. I know we sometimes have warm snaps, but chances are it's going to be pretty cold. You said it's going to be outdoors. Do you want your girls to freeze?

  • IMHO, the dress is all wrong. It does look like a frumpy old ladies dress. For that amount of money, I would keep looking.

Also as PPs have said, you have alot of time to shop around. I would wait until at least the Spring styles come out in the stores before you set on something. Unless you are paying for your BP dresses, then they should have some say in what they are wearing. I would be upset about paying $150 for a dress I KNOW I would not ever wear again. Since you have a Fall theme, why not a champagne color or a brown shade? It will still go well with your theme.

I had my heart set on my girls wearing a particular shade of green but none of them liked it so we settled on a blue - still one of my colors and my ladies all like it too.
