Mother of the Bride dress

Are there any dresses out there that don't look old ladyish? It seems most of the dresses I've come across so far remind me of dresses my grandma would wear. Thanks for any help!

Re: Mother of the Bride dress

  • my mom found her's at nordstrums, and it's gorgeous, just have her pick out a formal to semi formal that she likes at a department store, then she can look as young or modern as she is comfy with
  • I agree that the "official" MOB dresses are very matronly.  I'm trying to convince my mom to just get a formal dress from a dept store or other store (she doesn't want to look old either!), but she wants to do the whole trying on MOB dresses thing.  She found a few dresses she liked on Brides.com.

Our main issue was that so many of the dresses are strapless with no matching wrap or are strapless with an ugly jacket.  I did notice that the cocktail length dresses seemed more stylish and current.  Maybe try that if she doesn't mind a short dress.
  • My mom got a nice outfit at Macy's. You could look in department stores for your outfit.

You could also look for a nice bridesmaid's dress, and possibly order a matching jacket/bolero if you want one. I think either of these BM dresses would be trendy yet sophisticated for a mother-of-the-bride (you don't want to look like you're trying to be 22 again, so I'd steer clear of anything skimpy or really trendy-looking ... but you're not limited to matronly outfits either if you have the figure and confidence to pull of something on the "younger" side):

If you're the daughter ... has your mother asked for your help? If not, let her pick out her own outfit. You don't have to choose or approve the style/color.

  • My Mom got her dress at VonMaur (pics in married bio). MIL got her dress at Macy's. I would also try looking at some of the different designers for dresses or outfit options.
  • When I was shopping today I saw a lot of very classy-but-not-stuffy options at Dress Barn.  Burlington also had some cute stuff.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
