Men's Black Wedding Band

FI works with his hands a lot and I have thought he would do best with a tungsten or titanium band. He recently tried on a friend's tungsten band and thought it was too heavy.

This morning he told me he wanted a plain, black wedding band. I have been able to find black titanium bands online but most say they are coated and I worry this will wear off, thereby defeating the purpose of getting a hardy titanium band. Black tungsten seems more common but then we run into the weight issue.

Are there any other black rings that can hold up to abuse? Does anyone have any experience with the black-coated titanium bands?

My FI also did not like the tungston becuase it was too heavy. We got his ring from Jared's. It's titanium, and mostly black. It is really dark gray, like gun metal color and then has a thick black stripe in the middle, so it is black for the most part. I didn't see the ring he got on their website, so it may be beneficial to actually go into a jewelry store and check some out.

  • What kind of work does he do? If there are tools or machinery involved, he should remove his wedding band while working.

Titanium is lightweight, but I've never seen a "black" titanium band, just very dark grey. Otherwise, Titanium sounds perfect for what you're describing.

  • He does plumbing and he is a bike messenger. He also works on his bike frequently.

Thanks for the feedback. We need to go to a jeweler so we can get sized anyway so I'll try to find one that offers a variety of band metals.

  • My H got a tungsten and carbon fiber band from Jareds. Clicky. My H has not had any issues with it and he works with his hands all the time (HVAC installer plus other odd jobs such as electrical, plumbing and generator installer) and he definitely has not complained about the weight.

  • I found this one on etsy. It doesn't say that it is dipped as titanium comes in multiple colors. And it's cheap!

    clicky
  • Maggie - that is the exact ring I wanted to get him originally. It reminds me of a bike wheel for some odd reason. Unfortunately his friend has it and he doesn't want to match him.

The Tungsten was my husbands 1st ring. He found it heavy and bulky, and my H is not a small man, he has huge hands (size 13.5 ring). I bought him a Titanium ring for christmas and he loves it, but it's not black.

TK seems to be eating posts so I'll try this again. I am sure my old post will appear as soon as I submit.

He works as a bike messenger and occasionally as a plumber. He also spends a lot of time working on his bikes.

We have to go to the jeweler to get sized anyway so I will try to find one that carries a variety of metals.

Duds - I'll look into the black zirconium.

Olive - I like the one you linked and the one he had already picked out (here) is by the same seller.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

  • About titanium...I was in a meeting and a guy was telling me how he had been shot in his left hand. Of course it was extremely swollen and the doctors in the ER needed to remove his titanium ring..but since titanium is such a hard metal they couldn't cut it off so instead they had to break his ring finger in multiple locations to get the ring off. Now his ring finger will not bend all the way. He told me that whatever I did, do not buy my H a titanium wedding band, but to stick with softer metals just in case.

Funny, my sister is an ER doctor and she said that every ER should have a tool that will cut Titanium rings. Her husband has a titanium ring. I'm surprised that this ER was so poorly equipped.

Edited to add: I did a quick google search on the topic, and found several websites confirming that titanium can be cut by any ER (the same tools used to cut gold or steel can cut titanium) or any jeweler. Snopes confirms this. The best response I found is pasted below (from http://www.e-weddingbands.com/store/titanium-rings.html)

Q: Can a Titanium ring be cut off?

A: Yes! Please be aware that in any situation where it might become necessary to cut off a Titanium ring - for instance excessive weight gain, hand injury, etc., - cutting through titanium will be more difficult than cutting through gold or platinum. However, it can still be done. In our own jewelry shop, we used a separating disc and flexible shaft tool-items commonly found in nearly all jewelry shops that work with gold, silver, and platinum--to cut through one of our 5mm domed and comfort fit titanium rings. Cutting it all the way through took only 20 seconds. Next, we contacted our local hospital emergency room and asked if they were equipped to cut off a titanium ring in an emergency. Most hospital emergency rooms are prepared to handle almost anything, and ours assured us that it would be no problem for them.

During our 30 years of jewelry repair experience, we've only seen a dozen or so rings that have been cut off in hospital emergency rooms, and in most of those cases the rings had been bent out-of-round and were putting painful pressure on the finger. Titanium rings are less likely to crush or bend out-of-round, so if you shut your hand in a car door or drop a heavy object on it, it might be safer to be wearing a titanium ring than a precious metal band! Nonetheless, if you ever need your Titanium ring cut off, just contact a local jeweler that uses separating discs. Please check with your local medical facility if you have concerns.

  • You may be able to find a slightly narrower tungsten band that is not as heavy. My FI didn't like the way the wider band felt so the jeweler was able to order one that is a little thinner. Good luck!

  • Looks perfect
  • In general Tungsten is the strongest metal. Other strong metals would be Cobalt, Titanium, and StainlessSteel. Cobalt is the second strongest...hope this helps.
  • I read that tungsten is brittle. Not sure if this is the caese but we are going with titanium to be safe. Black bands look so cool!
