How to plan dress size for pregnancy

Hello,

I am the MOH in a wedding in April. I will be 7 months pregnant. I already have my dress, but its sized for the pre-pregnant me. From the input I've received, it sounds like I will need to buy a new dress. How do I determine what size to order when my belly now isn't even close to what it will be then?

Thank you!

  • I would contact the shop you ordered from or plan to order a new dress from, I'm sure they've dealt with this situation before. You should probably order larger than you think you'll need and just plan in getting it altered down right before the wedding.

  • I don't think there is a way to figure out how big you will be. I would just wait and buy a dress right before the wedding.
  • I would get one of those maternity-style dresses that has lots of room for error.  Straps definitely.  As long as the bust is close and there are straps so that it won't fall down, the fabric below the bust is volumnious enough to cover whatever size belly you have:

If the bride picked out a specific dress for you to wear, you would likely have to convince her that you in a dress that fits is best for you - so the same length, colour, fabric, etc. but in a different style that is more maternity-friendly.  Lots of BM designers have these style of maternity dresses.
  • There is no way to plan exactly. I was not huge at 7 months, but there was definitely a bump that required extra coverage. I spent a lot of my days in cotton sundresses. They left lots of room for "growth".

That being said, something with an empire waist and straps would work well IMO. The dresses Naomi posted above look perfect.

    Good luck!
  • I agree with the empire waist style with straps would be best for you.  Since you are the MOH, it is not a big deal if your dress does not "exactly" match the others in the BP.  I would say go for a flowing chiffon material.  It is light and elegant at the same time.

  • Thank you for all of the responses!
I actually waited too long to call the dress shop (shame on me) and they told me there's not enough time to order a new dress. I can however, order extra material and have a seamstress make the alterations. I'd much rather find whole new dress because its going to cost the same amount, but I'll keep looking.
Naomi, where did you find that first picture (the burgundy maternity dress)? That is the exact color of our BM dresses and would be perfect!!
    Thanks again!
