Where did your G-Ma buy her dress?

Hi-
My grandmother is in her 70's and coming to our wedding from overseas.  I am in charge of finding her a dress here in the States.  Do department stores carry dresses for mature women?  I honestly have never seen them there and don't know where to start looking.  Would like to spend less than $175.

Thanks girls :)

Re: Where did your G-Ma buy her dress?

  • My Mom has good luck finding my grandma dresses at Dress Barn.  It's kind of a random store since its mostly in strip malls but they carry larger sizes.  HTH!
  • Are you supposed to buy the dress without her trying it on? Do you know her style preferences? Or will she be here in time to find one and get it fitted?

Because I'm an older bride, my Mom is in her 70's (same as grandma's age to the rest of you). I found a fabulous dress at Nordstrom's Rack (their discount store) that I was tempted to buy her, but would never do it because I couldn't be sure if it would fit her right. And I see her often!

US sizes and other countries sizes are totally different. You will at least need her measurements, plus height & weight, to really make a good guess as to what to get.

If you have to do this before she arrives, I'd recommend finding something at a department store chain that has a liberal return policy and get her a couple of selections. Macy's, Nordstrom's, J C Penney, Sears, Lord & Taylor all have cocktail or evening dresses in multiple sizes. It would help to know what colors she likes.

    Good luck.
  • Thanks for the great advice!  I do have her measurements and color preferences.  My mom and I went today and found a dress at Macy's and one at JC Penney.  Since both have a 90 return policy, we'll keep both dresses until grandma gets here and then she can pick one, we'll return the other :)

In case anyone else is looking, the one at JCP was 39.99 on sale.  What a steal!
