where to find an inexpensive veil?!

I can't believe veils can run up to $1,000-1,5000?!  We are having our wedding ceremony at St. Patricks Cathedral in NY and the aisle in this cathedral asks for a long sweeping veil...or at least I believe it does.  However, I cannot wrap my head around spending $1,000 dollars just on a veil.  I do have an amazing seamstress but I want to buy the material and embellishment on my own and just have her make it for me.
Where is the best place to find these type of things in New York? I'm sure there are plenty of places but I just don't have a clue where to start?

Please help?  Thank you!

  • Try other places online like ebay, amazon, or check out the wedding classifieds board here.

  • If you want to just buy the material and have your seamstress make it, go to a Michael's or a Jo-Ann Fabrics to get the fabric and embellishments, or just tell your seamstress what your vision is - as a seamstress, I'm sure she'll know where to get that sort of thing.

  • I would definitely try to find someone to make it for you. Unless you want extremely fancy embellishments (covered withSwarovski crystals, etc.), veils are incredibly inexpensive to make. My mom is a designer/seamstress and has made a number of veils for people and even if she charges to make a small profit, they are wayyyy less expensive than buying one from a store (we were shocked at the prices, too!). Find out if anyone in your area does this kind of work, or if you know a friend who sews, see if you can "commission" one from them. That way you can help design it if you want and it's even more special because it was made just for you by someone you know!  Good luck!
  • If you want a simple cathedral length veil with no embellishments then make it yourself.  I made my fingertip veil for a grand total of $8 and people were amazed to find out that I didn't purchase it from a store.  But if you do want some embellishments such as lace or pearls or rhinestones then I would talk with a local seamstress to see how much they would charge.

Buying a veil from a bridal store is ridiculous and they should be ashamed of themselves for selling them for such an outrageous price.
