When to start dress shopping??

we are planning the wedding for sometime in Oct of 2014, when do I start dress shopping? Who do I take with me? Do I bring a deposit when I go?

If you are ordering a designer, they often take 6-9 months to come in.  Allow extra time to actually find the dress.  I'd start at a year.  Wouldn't hurt to look around now and get ideas.

Take whoever you feel comfortable with and whose opinion you highly value.  Don't bring a whole stampede of people.  Just one or two is enough.

And I'd make sure you have a checkbook or credit card to leave a deposit in case you find the dress.  Good luck!

Take people who will be honest with you, not ones that just say you look great in everything. You want them to be nice, but if a dress isn't flattering, they should tell you even if you love it. But you can easily wait until summer 2013 to go shopping.

No she can't.  Not unless she plans on buying off the rack or maybe from David's Bridal.  Many dresses take 6-9 months to come in.  Starting in the summer leaves about 4 months.

Summer of 2013 would be fine and would give her plenty of time because she said shes getting married in october of 2014 so that gives her over a yr still to shop and plan

I just bought mine yesterday for my June 8 2013 wedding. If I was getting a dress with a design at the bottom (like beading or embroiadry) the consultant told me I'd have to order by the end of August to get it in time. That is because I am really short and they would need to specifically make the dress so it fits me proportionally without cutting any of the bottom off for the hem (forgot the exact name of this type of alteration.) The dress would arrive just on time allowing 6-8 weeks for any alterations that needed to be done.

I would order it about 10 months before, depending on the type of dress you want.
I would start looking a year before. I went to look at dresses 5 times and tried on 50 dresses. I started looking this past June and before I knew it, I became very busy and didn't start looking again until last week.

I took my mom and sister and when I finally chose a dress we just came back the next day with the deposit which was 50%.

I apologize, reading fail on my part!  I thought the OP said she was planning her wedding for October 2013.

I didn't buy a designer dress, the dress I tried on in the store came home with me that day.  but considering all the comments regarding designer dresses, if you are thinking about buying a designer gown, it wouldn't hurt to go shopping early and atleast find out from the store clerks how long it takes for your dress to be made and arrive.  take into consideration the length of time they tell you and go from there.  also consider alterations, which you can ask about when you go shopping.

If you are buying off the rack like I did, I wouldn't go more than 9 months out.  David's Bridal does your first fitting 3 months out, and depending on if they have your size in the store they may have to order it or you may take it home that day.
