venting...sorry...over a dress!

Hey ladies. So, I'm getting married in October. I DONT have a dress yet. I'm starting to think I'm the ONLY bride in the US who feels like the dress isn't the most important part. I want casual, cotton, very low key. I have not looked yet. The reason is because I'm working on my weight (already lost almost 20 lbs in 5 wks) and I am the type who can lose fast if I try. I know my co-workers are trying to help, but this one is like you have to get it now, why don't you have a dress now!!?!?? it's driving me insane. literally. i actually avoid talking about it with her. i plan to hit up stores in august  and buy off the rack. I'm not crazy am I?? Come on, I know a lot of brides who have planned a wedding and got a dress in less than 3 months. It can be done! WHY is this lady trying to kill me!??!?!?! UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Right, so tell that to chicky at work, and add on that you'll get a dress in plenty of time.

    End of story.
  • Eh, I found a sample dress with 4 weeks to go so wedding timelines mean nothing to me, clearly.

I think the dress is a way bigger to North Americans. Most of my European friends didn't even wear wedding dresses.

If you're buying an actual wedding dress though from a wedding store, you might want to look sooner, unless you would buy a sample dress (which is what I did, despite not planning on buying a "wedding dress" Until my mom made me).
  • The key is you said you're planning on buying off the rack, which makes a huge difference. I'm getting married in October too, bought my gown last September, arrived in February, and I have my first fitting in July.

So, I wouldn't wait too long in case you do find an off the rack dress that still needs some alterations. But, keep in mind that most dresses can be altered up or down 2 sizes.

When that one coworker says that just remind her you're not buying a typical wedding gown that requires so much lead time, but you're happy that she's stressing about your wedding so that you don't have to :)
  • Yeah, just tell her that you aren't worried and she shouldn't be and she's stressing you out!!

  • if you want casual and cotton there are a TON of really cute white summer dresses out in department stores.

Also, why wait until you lose a few more to buy the dress? It can always be taken in a bit during alterations. I really don't understand the no shopping until I lose "x" pounds mentality.

  • THANKS GIRLS!!!!!!!! you made me feel much better!!! :)
  • You should try the J Crew wedding dresses when you decide to start looking.  Their dresses are very natural and somewhat casual for a wedding dress.
  • Sometimes you just have to watch what you say to co-workers, so that way they don't know all of your business and bug the crap out of you. Another place to check out is jessicamcclintock.com  She makes some casual, not so long train type dresses that you may like.
  • Try J-Crew.  They have a bunch of cotton, casual style wedding dresses there.
  • Good ideas from PP's, but really, I wouldn't wait until the last second if you can avoid it. It might take you some time to find the dress you are looking for... even if the dress isn't the most important thing to you, I'm sure you still care how you will look in the dress and it might take a minute to find the right one to make you feel awesome. and like PP said, you might have to have something altered. or once you do start trying dresses on, you might even find that you care more than you think.

however, none of this is your coworker's business. I would just tell her you are going low-key with the dress and will probably wait to buy one. I hate the timelines... according to them, I am way behind on everything!! haha

    Good luck!
