Convertible Bridesmaid Dresses

So I've run across convertible dresses and I am so impressed. I would love for my bridesmaids to get these dresses. Does anyone know of any reputable places where they can order?

My girls got Dessy Twist wrap dresses. They love them, and I just bought one for myself in a different color.

  • Just a note, these dresses cannot have cups sewn in due to the jersey fabric that most of them come in, and most are completely backless and thus require your bridesmaids to be bra-less. I would think twice if you have any women who are even slightly overweight or who will feel uncomfortable without a bra in your bridal party. They are really very revealing.

<div>That's a very good point. But the etsy site I posted sells bandeaus that can be worn under the dress for modesty, plus there are non-revealing ways of tying the tops as well. But yeah, OP should definitely run these dresses by her girls first.</div>

I'm currently a bridesmaid having to wear one of these, so just for some more firsthand experience, the bandeaus don't really look very nice under the dresses. In fact, they make the girls who need to wear them look pretty lumpy and frumpy while the other girls who don't need them look very sexy with their revealed backs and such. And the tying-methods that are more amenable to wearing a bra are also pretty unflattering. They involve creating awkward-length sleeves out of the straps and the fabric cutting directly across the bustline. They are also incredibly overpriced for a stretchy jersey skirt with two strips of fabric attached, even the "cheaper" ones are probably only worth 20 bucks, since they have no inner construction whatsoever. I am a slim girl with a large bust and am stressed weekly over how I am going to have to tie this dress without a bra and without a tube of fabric pulled over my body to cover me up, when the other girls don't need one.

I say this totally without snark, but unless all of your girls are over 5'5 and flat chested, they are not going to be happy with these dresses. If they are built that way, they will look smoking hot in them! Just make sure you take everyone to try them on and really think about how they will feel.

</div><div>That doesn't sound good at all! I think that's what's been preventing me from buying those dresses -  I definitely need enhancement in the chest area and can't go without.

  • I've seen a few Etsy shops that sell them. I absolutely love teh idea though. Then your bridesmaids will all have similar dresses but they can have a slightly different look to them - if that's something you're into. And if not, they can still wear them later on (for real!) and have a versatile dress

  • My MOH chose to buy a Two Birds one (I'm doing mismatched so this was completely her decision). She LOVES it. She says there are plenty of options to wear bras with if you have a convertible bra, and from the pictures I've seen, she looks gorgeous in it.

  • I love the look of the convertible dresses and bought one for myself. I have DDs and knew I would need to wear something underneath it (Bandeau) I have still not found a way to make the dress "work" for me. I second PP who say to check with bridesmaids and that it will probably work best for somewhat flat chested women.
  • I agree with PP about the dress style not looking that great on people who aren't tall and thin. I have seen incredibly unflattering photos of women who are large chested or even a tiny bit chubby in this dress. The fabric is very unforgiving.

I agree...it might not be flattering and the best choice for all your girls. Comfortwise, it can be a bit constricting depending on how you wrap it. It's a bit of a shame though...it's one of those things that's a fabulous idea in theory, but not necessarily executed well.

However, if you take all that into account and still want to go with it, you can get it from eDressme.com, vonvonni.com, henkaa.com, to name a few.

    Good luck!

That doesn't sound fun at all!

You could try wearing a NuBra with it...it would be better than nothing. Nordstrom and a few other places sell it. (Just Google 'NuBra' and it'll come up).

It's basically 2 padded cups that clip together in the front and have adhesive on the inside. It's completely backless, so it wouldn't limit your options with the dress in any way. Maybe a NuBra and a halter-style tying would be best for a larger bust.

    Hope this helps!!
  • These dresses are great! I love them, I have been looking at them even before I got engaged for my bridesmaids.  I bought one for myself a few months ago, from Nuova Vita www.nuovavita.com.  They are on etsy too.. Great quality and the prices were not bad at all.  Two birds was out of my price range.  They also give discounts on bulk.  I did not like Dessy fabric to casual for me.
  • I made myself one. There are plenty of instructions over the internet and are pretty easy.
The usual problem is the fabric (usually a really thin jersey fabric) but if you do them yourself you could always get a nicer, flattering fabric.
Also there are LOTS of ways to wear them with a strapless or a low back bra.
    Excuse my english!
