Seamstress

I am looking for some advice. Our dance instructor recommended a woman to hem my wedding dress. She works out of her home, no problem. I go for the fitting and the dress is a bit tight but my friend could have zipped it. The lady told her to stop and told me I "had my work cut out for me." I was embarressed and when she was done pinning I took of the dress. She told me she would need unti beginning of oct (wedding Nov 3) so i told her I would call her in sept to get an update because that seemed like a long time to have the dress.

Today I call her( I gave over a month) and when asked if she had an idea of when it woud be done, she responded that it had been done. Did she call, NO!

Here's my question: Because I was flustered I never asked  how much she charges. Today she said $125. I have two layers of material. Does this price seem correct?

Re: Seamstress

  • WOW! I'm shocked that you still allowed her to alter your dress after insulting you! I'm so sorry she did that--no bride needs to hear that.

Very rude that she also didn't call. $125 seems like a somewhat reasonable price--maybe somewhat high, but I'd give her the money and get your dress so you don't have to deal with her anymore.

I hope you have better luck with your vendors in the future!

  • It's not an unreasonable price - but she was quite rude, and I likely wouldn't have used her as my seamstress. If there is lace or beadwork on the bottom of your dress it either has to be removed and replaced by hand, or the dress must be taken apart at the waist and shortened there. Both alterations are time consuming.

I'd tell the person who recommended this person about your experience, so that if they recommend her again, they can prepare the next bride for the seamstress' lack of manners.
