Groom's Attire

I'm having a fairly casual wedding (outdoor ceremony, barn reception) and don't feel like my FI should wear a full tux. I like the look of shirt, tie and vest for him and then just shirt and tie for the groomsmen. Can we rent tuxes without a jacket? Or should he rent the whole tux and just not wear the jacket? Or just have him buy new pants, a vest, a shirt, and a tie?

I also have to try to convince him not to wear black, but that's another issue. Why he wants to wear black for an outdoor August wedding is beyond me.

Re: Groom's Attire

  • Absolutely let him choose and wear what he wants to wear. Of course, you can (and should) suggest a formality of attire he should lean towards matching based on how formal your bridal gown is.
  • If you're having a casual wedding, then a tux isn't appropriate.  Tuxedos are very formal evening wear.

If the groom is going to wear dress pants, shirt, tie and vest, you will have to buy them.  You might also consider having the groomsmen wear vests, too, which will look more finished than just a shirt and tie.
  • He keeps talking about tuxes, but I don't think he knows that he has other options. Obviously if he still wants to wear a tux once we talk about it more he can do what he wants. I was just asking how people have achieved a certain look.

  • I would do suits like CMGr suggested.  And if you did a different color than black (grey, navy, khaki), then it helps to tone it down a bit.

PS - I wouldn't suggest renting a tux and not wearing the jacket because the pants might have the tux stripe in it.  I think that it would look really silly.

<div>I completely understand this. My husband didn't know he had other options, either. Whenever he heard "wedding," he automatically assumed that meant he had to wear a tux. He was thrilled when he found out he didn't. </div>
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Options, some tux places do rent suits too. So when you go to look at tuxes see if they have suit & have him try on both to see what option he likes best.

I know for the tux shop we went to for my wedding, they do rent just vests & ties. My dad already owned a black tux so all he needed was the vest to complete the look so we rented just that for the day, oh yeah a shirt too because for the colors he needed an ivory shirt & his shirts are all white. But the vest, tie & shirt were only $37.50. Now I'm not sure if places will split up pants & jackets, but if they don't just tell the guys to not wear the jackets.

[QUOTE]Honestly, He can buy a two piece suit for almost the same cost as a tuxedo rental.  He can use it for other things - like job intervieews.

</div><div>This is what we planned on doing as well.  After researching the costs of renting a suit, my FI and his BM have agreed to go buy a suit together when one of the suit places is having a BOGO sale so they can split the cost.  So now they will each have a suit for intereviews, funerals and attending other weddings.  (Of course we are only having one person on each side for our bridal party).
