Adding a Corset to dress with decorative buttons?

I just ordered my dress this weekend (YAY!) and the only thing I wasn't sure about is its a zipper back with decorative buttons. I've already lost more than 10lbs this month and I wanted a corset dress to have some flexibility once alterations are done. I'm thinking of having the zipper replaced with a lace-up but I wonder if it would look odd with the buttons that continue down the back.

Has anyone seen or altered a dress with these similiar buttons and a lace-up corset? I was thinking I could have the tie done so it tucks in to the dress too and doesn't have the bow showing.

Oh if anyone has pictures of a button and lace-up please link it. I can't seem to find any examples just people thinking of doing it.

Re: Adding a Corset to dress with decorative buttons?

  • I think if you add the corset back, you should have them remove the buttons.
  • Agree with PP.  Take off the extra buttons down the bottom if you go for the corset back.

For what it's worth, though, I prefer the look of the covered buttons to a corset back.
  • My dress has a corset built into the actual dress. It has buttons all down the back so you can't see the corset part, but it definitely does it's job! I'm not sure if it's the look of the corset that you want or the support, though.

  • @emily, Maybe I'll ask for the hidden. Its not really the look but the support and the fear that it won't fit right after the alterations if my weight changes. I have had friends complain that just from morning to night on their wedding day they got smaller from not eating and being busy and the dress kept sliding down.

When the dress comes in I'll definitely ask about a hidden corset.

    Thanks!

  • The corset in my dress actually has like 3 or 4 different sets of hooks, so it could easily go in or out, even during the same day! It's a strapless dress but with the built in corset, I feel VERY secure in it! The other plus side is that I don't need to worry about a bra because it's all built in!
