Too big of an alteration?

So I bought a dress that I absolutely loved, but I'm starting to wonder if it really was the best choice.  I love everything about the dress except for the silhouette (which I like, but don't love).  I always thought I would get an A-Line dress, but what I ended up with was a fit and flare.

What I'm wondering is if anyone has ever had a fit and flare dress altered to fit more like an A-line?  Is this even possible?  Am I crazy to even be considering this?  I think I would just be more comfortable if I had a little more room to move around.  I loved the way that some of the A-Lines I tried on moved and how comfortable they were, but I love everything else about this dress.

Here's some pictures of me in the dress so you all can see:

  • I'd be willing to guess there's no extra fabric to let out. It's much harder to make something bigger than smaller. FWIW, I think the dress looks lovely on you as is. Why did you buy it if it's not what you want?

I agree with PP's this dress looks lovely on you.

But, I dont think it's possible to alter.

  • An A-line requires more material, so you're not going to be able to alter this dress silhouette without adding fabric panels, which I think would ruin the look of the dress.

The dress is really nice on you, and if you love everything else about the dress I'm sure it will be okay.  As far as fit and flares go this doesn't look to be all that tight and seems to be a nice compromise between fit and flare and A-line.
  • I think it is impossible to alter a fit and flare into an a-line because the fabrics for both types of dresses are cut completely different.

  • I agree with PP. you can't make a fit/flare into an A-line.  You need more fabric.  One thing you can do, since you seem like you have some room in that dress, is maybe add a light crinoline to sort of have it flare out a little more?   Just a thought so you can get closer to the look you like.
  • Thanks for the input everyone!  I sort of guessed that it would be impossible, but I figured I'd see if anyone had any experiences like this.

The dress was what I wanted when I bought it, I'm just starting to have second thoughts.  I guess that's probably normal.  I still love it, I'm just worried about being comfortable with such a form-fitting dress, it's not what I would usually wear.  (Not that anyone usually wears a wedding dress on a day-to-day basis...)

The dress in the photos is the sample with clips in the back.

When they took my measurements, my dress size in my hips was about 2 or 3 sizes smaller than in my waist and bust, and I ordered it in the size that fit my top half, so I'm guessing that when it comes in there's going to be extra fabric in the hip area to take in.  If I can keep it a bit looser from the waist down maybe that will be better.  I guess I'll just have to see what it looks like when it comes in.
  • It looks absolutely fabulous on you and it really compliments your shape. I'd say stick with it! Have second thought jitters is normal.
