Groom's Attire- tux or suit

My future husband is set on wearing a suit at our wedding. My mother and friends are telling me that since our wedding is formal, it is important that he wear a tux, as a tux is more dressy than a suit. I personally have no idea what the difference is (not on the up and up with male fashion). I certainly do not want anyone to outshine my man on his big day in terms of attire, so if we are having a formal evening wedding, should he be in a suit or a tux? Thanks knotties!

Re: Groom's Attire- tux or suit

  • i think either is fine.  tuxes are more formal but suits are definitely sharp too!  but if he does wear a suit, have the rest of the men in the wedding party wear suits too so they don't dress "more formal" than the groom.

My fiance was set on wearing a suit as well (didn't want the vest, bow tie, etc). We actually rented tuxes (there was more of a variety of color, style, etc) and are keeping it super simple with just renting the shirt, pants, jacket and tie.
That way it'll still lok like a suit.

  • My fiance is wearing a suit.  He is about 5'10" but really really skinny.   Last summer he was in a wedding and had to rent a tux..it looked awful on him, the pants were so baggy.  Anyways, after that we bought him a very nice suit and had it altered to fit him perfectly.  For the wedding, we purchased a matching vest, crisp white shirt and a nice black tie.  The groomsmen will wear suits as well-minus the vest.  I think it will look great.  And at the very least, the groomsmen dont have to spend $150 on a tux that they dont get to keep..they can turn around and spend that money on a suit---that doesn't need to be returned by 11 am the next day!

  • The main difference between a tux and suit that I can see is that a tux has a shiny lapel, a suit does not.

Tuxes are typically worn with vests, maybe cummerbunds (though these are a bit dated, IMO), and bowties or neckties. A vest and necktie can just as easily be worn with a suit, but a bowtie and cummerbund might look a bit odd. Some guys wear tuxes with a wing tip collar shirt (the collar that stands up on the neck and just has the corners folded down) which goes better with a bowtie and is also a more formal look.

Tuxes also tend to be tailored and a little stiffer thus making them look more "formal", but there are lots of very nice suits which are equally well tailored, if not better.

This is all to say that unless you are having a black tie wedding, either a tux or suit would be fine. We had a formal hotel ballroom evening wedding and our guys all wore suits. Unless it's "black tie required", all of the male guests will be wearing suits anyway. You can bump up the formality of the suit by adding a vest, a nice tie, and pocket square or boutonniere.

  • My FI & his GM are wearind brown pin stripe suits with a vest & tie. Iwas told them some thing and to have them wear tails but my FI is not a classy dressy man. He wears ripped jeans & holey shirts to work every day and comes homes dirty & smelling like gasonline. So I didn't want to take him out ofhis comfort zone that much. Besides I think what we picked out looks fabulous & it goes with the BM. Who cares what anyone else think it's about you & your FI & what you two want
