Re: Midievil wedding

  • The only way I have ever seen people do this is at our local Renaissance Faire, which has a chapel, an ULC-ordained guy who dresses as a Tudor-era bishop who performs the ceremonies, and obviously costumes available for rental for the guests and wedding party.

If you just want a sort of medieval-inspired wedding gown or something, there are dozens if not hundreds of online retailers who sell costumes for Renassiance Faire actors and other enthusiasts.  These can run the gamut of prices, but even the lower-end ones don't come cheap, because they're a specialty good.  If you want to go really cheap, I would suggest maybe trying one of those Halloween stores that start popping up this time of year.  They wouldn't be anything close to authentic, but they usually have "princess"-y costumes that might work.
  • My best friend's wedding was Medieval-inspired.  She tried to have it at our local Faire but the timing didn't work out.  So, she found a venue that looked like a castle.  Her officiant used a Ren-style ceremony and the venue came up with a Ren-menu.  The guests and WP wore costumes (see pic below - I was a BM),

She looked at two options - taking a mainstream wedding dress and altering it to be more Ren-like, or, like calliopeia2013 said, purchasing an authentic costume.  She used an online retailer that created a muslin piece to her measurements, then went from there.  It was a lot of emailing!  GL!

  • I feel like a true history buff would spell 'medieval' correctly and be able to find resources for authentic garb--which, as pointed out, is not cheap. It will look tacky if you're not willing to put in the investment for good quality. Why do you want to do this and what does it mean to you? After all, the medieval period covers hundreds of years of history and different fashions.

I don't know that you are very clear about what you want. A friend of mine purchased the dress she bought for her wedding from therosedress.com. Her focus was not medieval, however, she has more eclectic taste (would explain further, but words currently fail me). She was pleased with cost and turnaround, but you will want to make sure you double check the size chart. They have more traditional bridal gowns. They have dresses that I suspect will fall under the guise you are interested in under bridsmaids gowns.

  • I'd have to agree with the girls. If you don't do a medieval themed wedding correctly... it'll end up looking like a 7 year old boy's birthday party. Can we ask what it is that you seem to like about medieval theme?

You can't see in the photo I posted, but yes, the groom did wear tights.  So did all the groomsmen and the fathers of the bride and groom.

  • I agree with the others.  This type of wedding needs tons of research, and quite frankly, funding, to look right.  All specialty themed weddings tend to run up higher in costs.

I used to work in a Renaissance Faire myself, and I can tell you that in order to have authentic clothing at lower costs, I spent 70 to 80 dollars on materals for underclothes, then hand sewed them.  Then I spent roughly 300 dollars on fabrics and materials for the rest of the dress that I usually wore.  Keep in mind, this is all hand-sewn, so no cost of labor.

Your average good quality, pre-made period dress will cost you well over 1k.  Also, keep in mind that period dresses were not white.  They were the most lavish dress the lady owned.

I can't even imagine telling my father he has to wear tights. Maybe I'll do it just to see the reaction.<img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />
