help with dress accessories- opinion please

Hi Ladies,

I bought this dress yesterday for $249 at Davids Bridal- which makes me happy.  However I want to add soething to it- here is a picture of us playng around with a rhinestone/ribbon headband that we used as a sash/belt

I am looking for opinions on the placement of a pin/brooch etc.  Also looking for your thoughts on what shape/size will look good.  Should I just do one or more? What are yur thoughts?

Thanks in advance, I really apprecaite it!

Re: help with dress accessories- opinion please

  • Would the pin/brooch go on the belt or somewhere else on the dress?
  • If it were me I'd have the belt just under the bust... like an empire waste and have the pin in the middle. just an idea..

    I love the green!

If you want a brooch/pin, I would put it right where you have the one in the picture - at your waist to the left, where the fabric sort of bunches up at the side. Reminds me of my MOH's dress, it has a brooch in that spot: http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Satin-Gown-with-Side-Drape-and-Brooch-8567_Bridal-Party-Bridesmaids-Shop-By-Color

Though your brooch could probably be a little bigger/fancier than my MOH's. I like the idea of working in color, especially the color of your BM dresses.

  • I bought the same dress!  I ended up with a 2nd dress that I'll ultimately use; but I was going to do the following on THIS dress.  Either one or a combination of the three:

    1. Add a big flower on the left side like the LARGE (big as 6 inch) black flower featured on this month's BRIDE magazinehttp://www.brides.com/ . Either black, or one of my color scheme (victorian lilac, ivory, or silver); or white.  I was also thinking of putting in 3 roses (big as a fist) that will overlap each other; 2 at the bottom, and a third on the top.

    2.  Add one strap on the right shoulder with the excess materials after hemming, overlayed with rosette (a copy of the feature on Maggie Sottero RD1044 dress that didn't look good on me).

    3.  Replace the back zipper with lace-up to add interest to the back.

The girl that helped me placed a sash of my bridal color around my waist, and added a brooch in the middle, and it looked fine.  The final price to add those is maybe about $30?

The dress by itself is elegant, yet simple (which is why I chose it in the first place), but like you; I thought I could personalize it.

  • Personally, I would scrap the belt/sash idea... but I'm just not a fan of sashes in general. I like the idea of the brooch or a flower like PP suggested. I would put it on the hip though, lower than what you have it in the pic. I also like PP suggestion of adding a strap or sleeves - or maybe a bolero?

I'm excited you bought the same dress!  Did they give you a quote on how much to change the back to a lace up?  I would LOVE to do that but I'm on a tight budget-

I am definately going to have the curved fabric in front pinned under because the edge looks raw.

When my mom and I were playing with things at davids bridal we tried alot of stuff and finally liked the one pictured but it costs $150- the dress was only $250!

Also, I didn't realize that it looks green- it's not, here it is <a href="http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Ribbon-Headband-with-Floral-Rhodium-Side-Motif-H7593_Accessories-Headpieces-Headbands" rel="nofollow">http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Ribbon-Headband-with-Floral-Rhodium-Side-Motif-H7593_Accessories-Headpieces-Headbands</a>

Here is the dress so people can see how it will fit once its taken in etc:  <a href="http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Satin-A-line-with-Asymmetrical-Skirt-T8076_Bridal-Gowns-Features-Designer-Gowns-Davids-Bridal-Collection" rel="nofollow">http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Satin-A-line-with-Asymmetrical-Skirt-T8076_Bridal-Gowns-Features-Designer-Gowns-Davids-Bridal-Collection</a>

My BM dresses will be from Davids Bridal also- Brown.
  • I would definitely not take it to David's just to get it taken in.  It cost me $25 at my local tailor; so I would suggest calling around in your area.  Look around online for the beaded sash (average $30-$45) if you're up for something like that as well.  I bought pin flowers of $1 each (fist-size) locally.

Because of the leg work with the lacing, I would think $75 will be pretty average for your local tailor.

I would leave the bottom edge alone, that's what sold me to the dress in the first place.
