what size should i order?

I am getting married next july and would like to start looking for dresses now. however, i am working on losing weight before my big day. i know everyone says this, but i started before i was even engaged or thought i would be. i had other reasons for it. i have about 40 i would like to lose. does anyone know how many sizes the dress can be made smaller by without it looking "weird." i thought i saw somewhere 4 sizes, but i'm not sure. if you have any suggestions that would be great.
thanks!

Re: what size should i order?

  • A good rule of thumb is two dress sizes (that'd be four numerical sizes--so a 12 could come down to an 8).

You might also consider when shopping that gowns with less adornment are easier to alter, and that corset backs can give you a bit more flexibility in sizing since they can be laced up to fit perfectly, even as your weight fluctuates.
  • I think I've usually heard that it can be taken in 2 sizes fairly easily and let out by up to an inch or two.

I would look at dresses now, and ask the store what date you need to order by in order to avoid rush shipping charges.  Wait until you're closer to that date unless the dress is being discontinued, and order the dress in the size you are on the day that you order.  It's easier to take a dress in than let it out.  Plus, then you're not screwed if your measurements stabilize at some point during your weight loss or ending up with a dress that's difficult to alter if you go down by more than a size or two.
