BM dress colors - am I thinking about this too hard?

Hi ladies!
I need some opinions on BM dress colors. I'm also asking my BMs the same question, but wanted to get some thoughts from you too, in case anyone has similiar colors, or has been to a wedding with them.

Here are the colors I'm using:
http://www.mypersonalartist.com/blog/2010/02/08/light-blue-purple-graphite-gray-hydrangea-wedding-inspiration/

For the dresses, I'm planning on doing the "I pick a color from a designer, you pick the style you like"... so everyone is comfortable and happy with their dress.

I LOVE blue hydrangeas. They will be used throughout the wedding (blue ones and also white ones). However, I don't really think that blue would be a flattering dress color, especially if we *try* (keyword: try) to pick dresses they *might* (again, keyword: might) wear again.

My other two options would be purple (like the one on the link) or a graphite/silver/dark grey color. I like them both and think they would be more flattering (and easier to find a color from a designer).

Things I'm thinking about to help make this decision are: what color flowers will they carry, is grey too "dull" of a color, will purple make it too purple for what I'm going for etc.. ? I might just be thinking about it waaay too much and now I'm just driving myself crazy.... so I need some opinions (aside from "calm down, it's not that serious"...)

I am also asking my BMs what they think since they will ultimately be the ones wearing the dresses, but I wanted to get some other opinions too.

Thanks in advance ! Sorry.. this got kinda long...

  • I think the purple will be easier to find than the grey. Purple is VERY in right now =) Also, if your flowers are that pretty blue, they'll make a nicer contrast against the purple than against the grey and def contrast better than the blue. Plus, most skin tones look nice in purple =)

  • I disagree, well I think purple is easy to find, but grey is SO popular right now.  2 of my 4 engaged friends are having grey and yellow weddings in 2012 with grey BM dresses.

Will you have blue hydrangea for any of the flowers?  Or is that just an example of the coloring you like?
  • I plan on using hydrangeas in general as the main flower (plus some other ones I'm sure... but I love love love hydrangeas).

Right now my general thinking is for me to carry white hydrangeas with maybe a few light blue ones mixed in (but that could change considering I still have 7 months to go)... and then the BMs would carry blue hydrangea bouquets.
But if I have purple dresses and blue hydrangeas for their bouquets, is that too "colorful" (OK I don't even know if thats the right word but I can't think of anything better). Although maybe it will be a nice contrast, too....  ?

I love both colors for dresses, and might just be thinking about this waaay too hard. I love this color palette because it seems so different, but as a result I can't really find examples of it being used in other weddings so I could see what other people have done... ahh!!

Right now my BMs are in the "we don't care we like both colors, its your wedding you decide" boat.. which is really nice, but not helpful for this situation... haha. I'm sure once they start to try dresses on we might start to gravitate towards a color... ? maybe... ?

  • You are waaaay overanalyzing this.  I do it to.

Gray is a super hot color right now and would look great with blue hydrangeas.
Purple is a classic and would be a great contrast for the blue hydrangeas.
You can't go wrong either way.   I would just decide which you like best on the BMs when you go shopping for their dresses.

PS-I am also using lots of hydrangeas in my wedding!

  • Also, I just want to make sure you're aware of the cost of hydrangeas and that they are in your budget.  At the florist my sister worked at, they were much more expensive (about $10-$12 per stem), although they are a larger flower (which means you typically need less).
  • i personally like purple better..i thing they would look great with the blue from the flowers...but i would just check to see what your BMs like
  • I'm way over analyzing this but I guess I can't help it...
Seems like its a split between the two -- so the colors might just end up being decided on when we're dressing shopping (at least I've got options, right??).

As for the hydrangea pricing - yeah.. I have heard they're more expensive (.. of course I had to pick a more expensive flower... ) but actually we have found a copule of florists who can do hydrangea bouquets, centerpieces, etc that are still within our budget.

Thanks so much for all of the input!

  • Because hydrangeas are in season during my wedding, it isn't crazy peony expensive.  But like you said, you need less flowers.  But maybe my florist has amazing connections! :)

  • I love purple! But I could be biased because I'm having a purple and silver wedding. If you are looking for a really nice purple, my girls are wearing dress by Mori Lee (www.morilee.com) and the color is grape. It is the perfect color purple and flattering on all of them

  • I disagree that blue would be un-wear-again-able, but then, I'm having my girls in different shades of blue and I love the color, so I may be biased. But perhaps a darker blue, like navy, to make the lighter hydrangeas pop?

  • Go with an eggplant purple, that way it's not too purple, but still a beautiful color. I love love love the look you are going for. Beautiful
