When should the MOB and the MOG start dress shopping?

My mom started looking when we started looking at BM dresses.  I would prob say 6-7 mo ahead of time if she wants to order something more traditional and have time for alterations.

It depends on the formality of the wedding. If it's formal, it's probably likely that the MOB and MOG would like to get a formal dress which are usually the "standard" MOB/MOG dresses out in boutiques. That should be taken care of at least 5 months in advance. Perhaps, it should be easier on the MOG for the MOB to get her dress sooner, so that way the MOG would have time to shop around.

It's a common courtesy for the MOB to pick out her own dress first and then show the MOG her dress so that way the MOG would not get a dress that would clash. The MOG can also know what kind of formality to get. 

My mother bought her dress about 6 months prior to my wedding date. I didn't realize that it was on a short timeframe for my future mother in law and it was stressful for her to find the dress within the month because all boutiques warned that she may be a too late if she waits longer. That's a lesson i wish I knew!
