BM dress question

I have five bridemaids...yes five, not sure how I got that many but that's another story.  Anyway, two of them are plus size and VERY gifted in the chest area.  Another BM is gifted on top, has a bigger tummy and a "bubble butt" as she calls it.  But she loves her curves and wants to flaunt them.  And my last girl doesn't care as long as she doesn't have to wear pink!

I am thinking of letting them all choose their own Alfred Angelo dress in Navy.  I don't really care if some are chiffon or taffita or silk...as long as they are navy.  I don't even care if some have straps or some are strapless.  It's truly not a huge deal to me that I'm going to loose sleep over.  But one of my BM is convinced it's going to look just horrible and I should at least have all strapless or all straps.  Problem with that is, she wants strapless and my two bigger BM want straps because of their chest size (we are talking H and I sizes here girls)

What are your thoughts?

Re: BM dress question

  • i have 6 bridesmaids of all different heights and weight, i let them choose their dress as long as it was the right color and length. they are all very happy with theirs dresses and are excited they can wear them more than one time. it took alot of stress off of me by letting them pick their own style.
  • non-matching bridesmaids is fine. ignore your BM....let your girls get the dress they want.
  • I agree.  My only requirements are 1) Same designer, which they all like Alfred Angelo; 2) Same color, navy; and 3) They must all be floor length.

Anything beyond that, I don't care much about!
  • I am doing this.  I just chose color and length and they are picking out whatever dresses they want.

  • I was a bridesmaid for my sister's wedding and we did the same thing (all Navy from Alfred Angelo) and it looked great! We all got the same fabric and knee length, but whichever style we wanted. Everyone got something that looked flattering and they felt comfortable in. We also could choose dresses that fit into our budget a little. Overall, it came out really great. I don't think they all have to wear the same dress
  • I did the same thing you are doing.  Half my BMs chose strapless dresses and the other half chose ones with some sort of strap.  I don't think anyone will care and/or notice.  They will all be comfortable and THAT is what matters.

  • i have 9 BM's yes 9... all of my girls are diffent shaps and sizes.. im going with halter dresses for my girls. i asked some of my busty girls and we are talking E and up all my girls agree halters would be best.

as far as your girls saying it would look horrible if you had all different styles i have been to several weddings recently that all have different dresses in the same color and i think its a good idea this way the girls get something they want and will maybe wear again and shows personality.

i say go with what you want after all it is uyour wedding

    GOOD LUCK
  • Do what you want to do.....it's your vision. I have 4 BM and they all have different tastes. I too let them pick their own style of dress....My sister has straps, my MOH is strapless with a corset back...and trumpet bottom, My best friend has one strap *(all of these are satin)  and my FSIL has chiffon but then again she's pregnant and didn't like any of the maternity dresses. All from Alfred Angelo...it's your day...if she thinks it will look bad tell her to pick a good dress lol!

  • It would look worse if your BMs looked like you stuffed them into a crappy dress. If they get to pick the dress within certain guidelines like designer/color then they can pick whatver suits their budget and their body.

  • I think that is a great idea. It's no good to force girls to wear a dress that they don't like. I had my bridesmaids wear black taffeta dresses of their choosing from J. Crew.
At first I didn't care about fabric however when I was looking at dresses at a shop, one of the girls showed me how different colors can look in different fabrics when next to each other. I didn't believe it until I saw it but there is a HUGE difference between black satin, silk, taffeta, and chiffon. When next to each other the different fabrics would look grey or navy. It may be the same with navy blue so it may be worth a trip to Davids to compare the color differences in fabrics.

  • I'm doing the same that you want to do. I'm specifying the color Watermelon from David's Bridal and that's it. So far, my BMs have chose different lengths and fabrics and that's fine by me; I just want them to be comfortable. IMHO, it looks a little creepy for 5 women to wear the same thing...
