Shoes... add some color or stick with tradition?

Okay, So I've been thinking about what shoes I want to wear for the wedding... and I haven't really even thought about style because I can't decide if I should be wearing ivory shoes (my dress is ivory) or shoes with color!  I've loved pictures I've seen of brides wearing different color shoes, but I'm not totally sure which I'd like better.  Is it totally out of the norm to wear shoes that aren't the color of your dress (my mom doesn't get it...)  Our colors are dark purple and silver.... So, what do you think?  Ivory shoes or a different color??  What are you doing?

Re: Shoes... add some color or stick with tradition?

  • I'm probably going to have my shoes be my 'something blue'  But I think purple shoes to match the bridal party would be cool as well.

So to answer your question, it may not be 'normal' but it's nothing revolutionary either.

  • I wanted to go with a colored shoe, but couldn't find one I liked until after I'd already bought another white pair.  Boo!

Yeah, but anyway, go for color, it's awesome.
  • I am wearing a pair of old wedge shoes. But I know what you mean about color! I had to add color to my dress. No one is going to see your feet. Do what you think is best. If you see a shoe in one of those colors that you love go for it!

  • Colored shoes are really popular right now.  My shoes are going to be gold and white.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Colored shoes are very in trend right now so it's not out of the norm to wear a shoe that doesn't match your dress.

It's really up to you and what you would prefer and the look you're going for. I went with an ivory shoe.

COLOR!!!!!!!!!!  I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOO wishing I'd done this for my wedding.  It wasn't a big trend then, so I didn't even think about it.  I think it's sooooo cute in pics.  Your shoes won't really be seen at the ceremony, but you can show them off at the reception!

Look at all the fun purple ones!

  • I thought about this quite a bit also. I was just going to go with an ivory shoe, but then started seeing all these great colored shows. So when I brought my shoes in to be dyed last week, I decided to go with color shoes to wear under my gown for ceremony. When I told my mom I went with rose petal color, she thought it was a great idea. Now I am so excited that I am getting colored shoes!

  • My mom thinks it's really weird too, don't worry! In your case, I think silver would be the perfect compromise. You could certainly wear silver shoes again, and there are lots of options out there. I also would love the idea of dark purple though. Or, you could have two pairs-- a more formal ivory pair for the ceremony, and then a fun pair of comfy purple ones for the reception. I ordered purple jeweled flats by Caparros from endless. com, but I'm not sure if I am going to keep them.
  • Another consideration...  I'd be more likely to wear colored shoes again than ivory.  Sure I might wear white shoes to a wedding or an event, but I'd put on funky colored shoes with jeans and a cute top and actually go out in them.

    Food for thought

  • I say go with color....here are mine - not really a color but I LOVE them!!!!! Dark purple is one of my colors as well and I was going to wear shoes in that color until I found these and I'm so glad I did!

  • I told my mother a few months ago that I'd be wearing a pair of green shoes that I already owned, and she wrinkled her nose. My sister/MOH kindly backed me up and explained that lots of brides wear colored shoes now. Mom was pushing for white shoes, but when will I ever wear those again?

Mom and I went for my fitting last week and the seamstress was delighted when I pulled out my green shoes. She said that a ton of her recent brides have worn colors, although I'm the first green one she's seen. Mom said they looked nice with my dress ... not sure if she really liked them or if she was just trying to make me happy, but I'm confident that she would've told me if they looked absolutely awful.

If the green shoes had looked bad, my Plan B would've been to find nice silver shoes. I think that silver or gold shoes are a nice compromise between white/ivory and colored shoes, because they are neutral and will also get future use (moreso than white shoes, anyway).

I'm wearing my favorite pair of black heels... that's I've had for about 3 years.  I love them, but I never get a chance to wear them.

I forgot to add... my dress is knee length, so my shoes actually WILL be seen.

  • My daughter wore colored shoes with her dress and I loved the look.  It was very modern looking without being over-the-top.

Her shoes were dark purple with green and amber colored stones and gold beads on them.
  • I love the look of colorful shoes, and like everyone's said, as a bonus, you can easily wear them again.

My dress was not very full in front and you could see my shoes when I walked, so I opted to go with silver. They don't look obnoxiously bright next to my dress, and I can still rewear them.
  • At my first wedding 8 years ago I wore colored shoes (lilac) and I will be wearing red shoes this time around. Im a bit of a shoe-a-holic and am always wearing different colored shoes to work with my dress slacks. So, it wouldn't be me to wear white shoes.
  • Definitely add some color! White shoes are kinda boring and since colored shoes are super trendy right now...why not?  I'm going with pink shoes.  And like people said, you can most likely wear them again.  And they will look super cute in pictures :)
    Photobucket OMG...I'm MARRIED! :)
  • I think more than anything you should pick the shoe with the most potential for many uses! If they happen to be a fun color than go for it...but if you think you'll get a lot of use out of an ivory pair then do that. I went for shoes that I could wear over and over...they're silver and I love them! :)

  • I'm going with ivory to match my dress.  I have to have flat shoes, and most of the awesome colored ones I've seen are heels.

  • Go with color. Have some fun! Our colors are chocolate brown and purple, and my dress is ivory with a small brown sash. I'm wearing strappy purple shoes. We're getting married in Jamaica, so the color will be awesome. And as a PPS said, maybe get some that you can wear with another outfit, that way you get your monies worth. My shoes will go perfect with another dress that I'm taking with me for a nicer dinner.

My FMIL said "Purple shoes!!" when I told her, but then she's said that about most of our decisions until she gets used to the idea. When she saw them, she loved them.
  • I was set on color and bought these beautiful Giuseppe Z. shoes, but then I found another pair of shoes that I loved and bought those too. I decided on the champagne color ones b/c of comfort. I wish I could have got some quick getting ready photos of the purple ones on.

  • I say go for it!  I ended up dyeing my crinoline a wine color (PIB) but if I hadn't done that, I definitely would've dyed my shoes.  I was having a hard time finding flats that were cute, and that I could dye.
  • I need to find a pair of silver leather high heel sandals... Can only find satin or white/ivory ones... any ideas where I can look? I have spend ENDLESS hours on the net...!
