Help! I'm anti-bridesmaid dresses

I have a longstanding hate for bridesmaid dresses and although I wish I didn't, it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I feel like they all look so similar and no matter what it's never a dress that someone would really choose to wear. I would much rather have an evening gown type option or at least something that didn't scream bridesmaid dress to me. Does anyone share the hate and have some solutions? I'm been looking at department stores and various websites but nothing really stands out, especially since I have a variation of body types and sizes in my bridal party to be mindful of.

Re: Help! I'm anti-bridesmaid dresses

  • I'm just having my girls pick a black dress and tying it together with pashminas
  • I never really wanted my bridesmaids to look like actual bridesmaids, and I've seen quite a few weddings with mis-matched dresses that look really lovely. Not sure how they do it, but everyone's wearing something different, but it all seems to come together. Like, Christina Hendricks' (Joan from Mad) wedding: http://www.eleganceandsimplicity.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/christina-hendricks-wedding-bridesmaids-dresses.jpg .

I think some people pull it off really well: http://www.hustleyourbustle.com/ckfinder/userfiles/images/mismatched%20-%20tq%20elizabeth%20medina%20photography.jpg .
  • I think different dresses for each girl that coordinate (like different colors or necklines) will probably be my choice since it's looking like an evening dress will be difficult. It's just so hard to find something even remotely outside the box that can work for a group. We should totally just open a store Wink

Consider giving your BMs a color and length, and letting them pick out their own dress in a style that is flattering to each of them.  I did that, and it turned out beautifully and my girls were very comfortable in the dress they selected.
  • J crew has really awesome ones that look like bridesmaids dresses but will not be ashamed to have in your pics. Hope this helps
  • When you told them to choose their own purple dress, did you specify a shade? Like, lilac or violet? Or, just any shade of purple?

[QUOTE]I asked my BMs to wear a purple dress of their choosing. It turned out quite nicely.

Watters (and Wtoo) as well as JCrew have some really classy options.

I've had to wear David's Bridal bridesmaid dresses twice, and both times they've pretty much fallen apart due to lack of quality.
