Engagement Picture Attire

I have no idea what to wear. At first I was thinking about doing something casual - jeans & a nice shirt with heels. But I think I would rather do something nicer - maybe a dress.

The pictures will be held in a state park, so lots of greenry, I think there is also a waterfall there too. I know my photographer told me not to wear heels because we will be doing some "hiking". I refuse to not wear heels so I'm going to do it anyway.

Does anyone have any suggestiong on what to wear? If i go with a dress, what type of dress - fancy, casual??

  • You can wear both.  Get some dressier shots you you and your FI and then do some casual ones you the two of you goofing off.

  • Wear one item with color!  It will make the pictures pop.  I wore a deep yellow skirt to contrast with my blue sweater.
  • i picked my e pic gear today, I'm going to wear jeans, my favorite pair of boots and super cute cardigan sweater over a simple tank top. my other thought was a super casual dress and a cardi, I really like the look of more casual epics, I love when couples look like who they are every day, becuase no matter how amazing everyone looks on the wedding day, the every day them is the reality.
  • We haven't taken our e-pics yet but my photographer recommended that darker colors work best.  She also said that small prints are fine, but large patterns end up not looking good.
  • I wore a cute vintage black dress and FI wore a long sleeve black button up but we wanted more of an "us" vintage feel.  They turned out amazing.
  • This is what I wore:

Our epics were at a university, so lots of greenery and water there too.

FI wore a blue polo shirt and khaki pants.
  • Bring sneakers with you, even if you want to wear heels for the pictures.  I was going to change into sneakers once we got to the park for our e-pics and forgot.  We were climbing around on outcroppings of rock and it would have been much, much easier for me had I been wearing sneakers.

Try to avoid bold prints/patterns.  We both wore jeans, I wore a solid colored t-shirt and DH wore a dark t-shirt with a very subtle print.  It worked very well for the outdoor setting.
  • I got this dress from Macy's for like 30 bucks!!! I really liked it because I thought it was simple, dressy, and cute! FI wore jeans, his boots, and a white button down to match. I thought it showed our style and personality quite well!

  • I think eveyone looks better in heels, even if you cant see them in the shot lol!
I like the general ideas expressed here about bright colours. i wouldnt do patterns because the pictures will seem more timeless and make sure you stay away from white near your face as it could give you a weird skin tone.
Just make sure you have fun Laughing
  • Re: shoes, I would wear wedges to be honest. You can hike in uneven ground and they'll still shape your legs.

If you are going to do denim, I would go to a denim boutique and get fitted for jeans that fit properly. I work for a denim brand so maybe I'm sensitive to this, but most people do not wear the correct size in jeans. The night before our shoot, I took pictures of the pants my FI wanted to wear so he could see that even "slightly big" looks awful once translated on film. I would ask for a clean, dark indigo or black wash... the wash technology changes pretty rapidly and you don't want to look back and have your pics look dated! (Think of how those people in acid washed pleated jeans feel now.)

We did two looks: first, I wore the dress in my avatar. It's a simple breton stripe with a black pencil shape skirt. Very classic--- but urban. For the second outfit, I wore a basic cream dress with a simple skinny belt and nude shoes (*nude shoes extend the leg line). We wanted to make sure what we wore was simple, classic and chic.

  • we both wore jeans and sandals. He wore a green and white plaid button up shirt and I wore a green tank top with a white button up shirt over it.  They turned out very well - except ours were outside too with lots of green and there was almost TOO much green. If you go for that idea, wear something other than green :)
