Shipping a wedding dress?

Has anyone had to do this? My wedding is out of state and I have no clue what the best and safest way to ship it is. Ideas?

keep it with you on the plane.  keep it as a carry on.  I would not ship it. what if it got lost?  what if it got damaged somehow?   I would not take that chance.

kashy- I was thinking about bringing it on the plane, but I'm just trying to think how am I going to put it in the overhead compartments??

oh ok.  well sometimes the airline will let you hang it in the are where the flight attendants sit. they have a closet for their things.  just ask them about that.

How large is it? I managed to fit my gown into an overhead bin. It wrinkled, but I knew I was going to need to steam it before the wedding anyway.

Some other options for flying with a dress: talk to your airline about storing it in one of the closets often used for first-class passenger coats. Many of the airlines are sympathetic to brides. You might also consider gate-checking it. That way you can see it go onto the plane, and it comes off immediately when you arrive. You don't have to pay fees on it or worry about it getting lost. I wouldn't recommend "regular" checking it.

i put mine in it's garment bag got a box the dress fit in folded once and then filled the box with bubble wrap and sent it priority mail with insurance, it got there just fine

I had mine altered in NY and sent out via the company to the wedding site in CA. It arrived within 10 days. It was great!

I'm flying a discount carrier - I have a full cathedral length dress with tons of beading. I am putting it in a travel space bag (the kind you smash - kinda - to get the air out and compress). I can fit the dress, accessories, tux, shirt and his accessories (everything but shoes) in one carryon ruck sack (think very large backpack). The only thing that doesn't fit was the crinny which is getting checked - worse case, you usually can find a crinny!  I have a pro cleaner on standby in Edinburgh-the same one that does all the royal family's cleaning- so as soon as we get there we take the dress and tux in, they will press them within 4 hours and we'll pick them up the night before the wedding.

Thanks for all of the advice! If I ship it with insurance and tracking..then I'll know where it is at all times, right??

If I do take it on the plane..how long do most dry cleaners need to steam it? Less than a day usually??

From what I found - if the shop is expecting you (you call ahead and have a "reservation") they can finish in under 3-4 hours.
