NWR men's attire question

FI's job is a business casual dress code so in the warmer months he usually wears golf polos since he tends to overheat and sweat really easily.  He also likes to wear ribbed tanks (aka wife-beaters, I really hate that term) underneath his polos so there is an extra layer protecting his nice shirt from getting sweaty.  Problem is that his current tanks are so old and worn out.  He picked some up at the store the other day (same brand, Hanes, and one size larger than the one's he currently wears) but they are super super tight and really long.  Like, down to his knees long.  We tried another brand (fruit of the loom) but the same problem exists.  I know how companies make clothes changes over the years but does anyone know where he can find these shirts that are not form fitting and the length of a dress?

Re: NWR men's attire question

  • I thought "wife-beaters" were supposed to be form fitting so that they weren't bulky under shirts.  Am I wrong?

As far as the length, I am not sure what brands would be best, but for the one's that he has bought you could always cut to the length he wants them and then sew a quick hem so the fabric doesn't frey or roll (that is if you are handy with a sewing machine).

  • Yes they are supossed to be somewhat form fitting but these thing are like super super tight.  Picture it as the eqivalent of super super skinny jeans but in shirt form, if that makes sense.  Or like those tight fitting underarmor/nike, etc workout shirts.  He complains that they are so form fitting it's hard to take a deep breath lol and calls them uncomfortably restrictive.  They have gone through the wash many many times and there has been no shrinking lengthwise, but he says they feel tighter on his chest each time they come out of the wash.  Guess we'll just have to keep looking.
  • Then why not just buy a bigger size?  I know that this doesn't help with the length issue but it will with the tight fitting issue.

  • My son (19 yrs old, 6'1") ran into the same issue a few years ago.

I think he now buys his A-shirts (better than the other term, eh?) at Nordstrom (their house brand). Those are thicker than FOL and Hanes, a much better length and don't stretch down to the great beyond.  LOL!

I'll be honest I think the companies started making them longer to cover the butts that hang out of the jeans now days. I've noticed if they are tucked in they cover. Not that I want to see any of it, but it may be an explanation as to why they are longer now.

  • My fiance buys his "A shirts" at target. He buys the target "Merona" brand and they fit him nicely. You may want to try those.

  • I'm a woman, but I love buying men's A-shirts to wear under a lot of my clothes. They are comfortable and cheaper than A-shirts from the women's department.

Anyways, I've also noticed that they are getting longer in length. The Hanes ones I buy can be cut to the desired length and don't even need to be hemmed. There's no problem with fraying and rolling isn't an issue since I always tuck them in (and I would assume your FI would as well).

    Good luck.
