Gown shopping 10 months in advance?

Ok so it is really important to me that my MOH be there to go dress shopping with me, the problem is that her husband is leaving for special forces training sometime near the begining of the year so she will be moving on base all the way to Alabama (We live in Pennsylvania) and my wedding is next October

The dress I am looking for is really simple so I am sure it could be easily altered if need be but does anybody think I might be crazy to go between January and March? Am I just asking for trouble?

Re: Gown shopping 10 months in advance?

  • Hmm, I don't know..I just ordered my dress last week and am getting married early July.  They said 6-8 mths to get in, then alterations on top of that..so as far as I know 10 months is time?
If anything, you might find a sample dress you love and can just purchase that way!
  • It's not crazy to go that early!  I got engaged in December and went shopping that month.. wedding is in 3 weeks.. luckily, I found a sample dress then.  It is important to take the people you want with you, so the timing sounds good all around. As PP's mentioned, dresses can take up to 6-8 mos if ordered!  Good luck.

  • Nothing wrong with shopping or ordering that far out. I am just under 10 months out and I placed the order for my dress just over two weeks ago. They said my dress would take 6 months to come in or longer. You also have to consider that if you are ordering in January you will run into Chinese holidays which can add time to your order, most dresses are made in Chine. Not sure which ones you are looking at but its a good bet the one you purchase will be.

    Have fun and good luck!!
  • It is not too early. I ordered mine almost a year in advance. It took about 7 months to come in. But since I was an out of state bride, I wanted to make sure I had plenty of time for alterations, etc.
  • I ordered mine 11 months out. I got it a size bigger because it is easier to take in then out. I am getting it altered 3 months before the wedding!
  • I ordered mine last month.  If you're really worried about it being too early, you could take her when you look and come back and buy when you're ready.

  • 10 months isn't too early at all. I ordered mine 14 months in advance, and it took over 9 to come in.

  • well one reason im nervous is i am a size 16 right now and I started dieting and working out much more so I could lose as much as possible not only do I want to look good but I noticed how much more you pay for plus sized gowns (yikes!) so that incentive. I want to continue to lose wieght up until I can make alterations do you think im playing with fire? I know its easier to take in than out but i dont know how samll i will get, not only do i have to fight making it to a goal weight but I was also built with my fathers strong russian build so God only knows what size I will be despite how much i weigh.

So I was wondering if there is minimal to no bead, tule, lace, ect how far can a dress be taken in? http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Strapless-Satin-A-line-with-Cuff-Neckline-T8778_Bridal-Gowns-Features-Designer-Gowns-Davids-Bridal-Collection this is my number one pick so far

  • from what I've heard, dresses generally shouldn't be taken in more than 2 or 3 sizes or it might change the look of the dress. maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can give more information on this. but the most important thing is to ask before you order. the store you buy from should be able to tell you how much a dress can be taken in.

I am getting married next month which is October. I started dress shopping in August 2009. but I only started that early because it was the only time I could go with all of the people I wanted. the next couple of months after that, I searched intermittently with no success. In January, I buckled down and spent pretty much every free hour scouring websites and visiting stores to try on dresses. I did not find my dress until March. It arrived in July. So keep in mind that it could take awhile to find the dress you love. And it might take longer for yours' to come in depending on what you order. Since you are trying to lose weight, definitely wait until the last minute to order. This doesn't mean you shouldn't be looking for a dress. Find the dress and then wait to order it so you know how small you are. And do not order a size smaller than what you are - that is way too much pressure.
  • My dress from David's Bridal came in 2 weekds after ordering (I paid in full when I placed the order, if that matters).  When it came in, there was a small yellow water mark on the underside of the train so I asked that they order another dress.  It arrived in 2 weeks as well.  Not that you want to push it that close to your wedding, but you could try on dresses with you MOH and wait another couple of months to be measured.  My consultant said it would take 4 months for my dress to come in and yet both came in almost exactly 2 weeks.
