What color stockings to wear?

I have an ivory full-length dress, with ivory shoes, and I want to wear thigh-high stockings with the dress. I'm not sure if it's more appropriate to wear a color that matches the gown or to wear nude so that it won't show up the shoes' color. Any thoughts?

Re: What color stockings to wear?

  • I am wearing open-toed shoes, but I would feel so weird without stockings. Is it really better ettiquette to skip stockings with open-toed shoes?
  • I agree with stockings being outdated (I stil have a woman at my work who *gasps* everytime I show up in a knee-length dress w/o them) I think it would be too hot to wear stockings under all that dress
  • I am having open toed shoes, and never even thought about stockings.  It is not bad "etiquette" at all if you ask me.  No one has ever said anything like that to me.....My bridesmaids also are wearing open toes shoes with no stockings.

  • Oh man my grandma would die reading this lol. I also don't like stockings- and if I have to wear them, I get thigh highs and wear them with closed toe shoes. I know they sell ones now for open toe shoes - they kinda hook onto your toe like a flip flop- so the stocking part doesnt show on your toes, but you have them on the rest of yoru legs. kinda odd- but an option.

  • I get too hot in stockings.  I'm skipping them
  • BEnnis - when is your wedding? If it's in the summer months, I would probably just go without stockings altogether - you don't want to be a flushed bride :)

  • Thanks for all the advice everybody.

kpwedkk - My wedding is in the middle of October, so I'm not likely to be too hot, especially up in the Poconos where the wedding will be held. Still, I kind of agree about stockings feeling outdated. I just worry a little about sweaty feet making my shoes smell. I know, gross, right? ^_-
  • Well, you're feet are gonna smell one way or the other.  I wouldn't wear stockings with open-toed shoes.  I agree with everyone else, very outdated.
  • I did manage to find some open toed thigh highs on amazon, so that is an option.

However, you can easily go without.  Dr. Scholls and Band-aid each make a 'friction stick' that helps keep your shoes from rubbing and forming blisters, if that's a concern for you.

(I'm mainly wearing mine 'cause FI digs them)

This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I'll be the odd-ball out here and say I LOVE wearing stockings/nylons and I plan on wearing a very pale nude with my ivory dress and ivory shoes (close-toed shoes however) I feel more pulled together in stockings and love the control top factor (I also think that stockings help make my legs less tired when I am on my feet for a while) :)

That being said, I would never wear stockings/nylons with open toe shoes.
  • Ditto pp's.. stockings, knee highs, pantyhose, etc.. are "outdated" IMHO. I haven't worn them since my mom used to dress me and make me wear them a looong time ago. The only time I may wear them is in the winter if I'm wearing a dress. I definitely didn't wear them under my wedding gown which I'm glad I didn't because I was already way too hot under all the satin, and I had on open toed gold shoes and the seam would have looked sloppy if it was showing.

My vote is to skip them, and wear the open toed shoes and get a nice pedicure so that the toes peeping through will be all prettified.
