How to hem when switching to flip flops at reception?

I want a very specific type of shoe for my wedding which will be very hard to find (red sparly...I am from Kansas after all).  I found some that will work but are 3 inch heels, and I don't think I can stay in them to dance all night, so I'd like to switch to flip flops.  If I hem for the heels, how big of an issue will the hem be when I switch to flip flops?  (Enough that I should keep looking harder for more comfy shoes to wear all night?)

  • Your dress will probably drag on the ground, by quite a lot with 3 inch heels.  Would you maybe consider wedges, or platform flip-flops to change into?

  • Would you be interested in a wedge type flip flop. What ever difference is between the shoes you plan on wearing and switching into will be the difference in length of your dress

  • That's a good idea about wedge flip-flips!  I was talking to a friend about this, and she said that when I bustle the dress it will sort of pull up some of the fabric anyway (even in the front because it gets pulled back a bit) so that the length difference wouldn't be as noticable.
  • I went from almost 4 inch heels to flip flops at the reception. With the dress bustled, it was fine. It touched the ground, but it's not like there was 4 inches of fabric all around the bottom on the ground.

  • Eh, it will drag a bit but with you on your flat feet in flip flops, you'll be pretty aware of your dress. Anyway even with your hells on, your dress probably own't be hemmed all the way to the ground. It won't be that big of a deal.

I think I've also seen red sparkly ballet slippers, if you wanted to go with no heel for both.  I don't remember where, but might be worth looking around.

  • I also recommend getting a wedge shoe.  I plan to leave my heels on for as long as possible but they are 4.5" high so I'm not sure if I will last all night.  I purchased a really cute pair of Kate Spade wedges in my wedding color to change into if my feet start to hurt.  I will wear them all the time after the wedding so I didn't mind spending the money.
  • I'm also switching into flip flops for the reception... I made a flip flop basket for the guests that are flat flip flops from Old Navy, but for me I'm going to go with the wedge flip flops pp's were mentioning because I don't want to trip over my dress. My MOH and BM's are wearing knee length dresses so they can change into regular flip flops with no problems. You can also find the wedge flip flops at Old Navy. HTH!
  • Thanks for all the suggestions ladies!
