so sad about my dress :(

I LOVED it when I tried it on the first time in the store, it was that magical "this is my dress!" moment...well it made it to the store last week and I went today to try it on and the hips were so huge on it! they are having to alter it a lot. PLUS there was a huge stain on the front of it! a brand new dress! The alterations lady tried to get it out but it just wasn't working. Plus my mom decided to tell me today she "wasn't wild" about my shoes I had picked, so by the point I was ready to just pay and get out :( This was supposed to be a happy day! Ugh! I'm hoping that they can get the stain out OR will order me a new dress.

  • I'm sorry you had a disappointing day.

Either they'll get the stain out or they'll replace your dress -- no question about it.  When do you go in for another appointment?
  • They are supposed to be calling me in the next day or two about the stain so that I can come in and look at it and decide if I want to pay for alterations or order another dress. The alterations lady was like "well if we can't get the stain out we can always add an applique there."...there are no appliques on my dress...so adding one would look BEYOND strange. If I got tomorrow or Wednesday and everything is good, I'll pay and then go in to get fitted after alterations on September 7.

  • Eeeek.  Where did you buy your dress?    I would probably just tell them to order another dress or give you a significant discount. I wouldn't want to pay full price for a dress that had a massive stain on it, even if they did get it cleaned.
  • If it is a brand new dress, there is no way you should have to keep it if it has a stain.  They should definitely order you a new dress if they can't get it out.  I bet once the fit is right, you'll have that same "this is MY dress"  moment, and as for the shoes, it may have been a bit insensitive for your mom to dis your shoes-but they're YOUR shoes for YOUR wedding; she doesn't have to like them.  If you love the shoes-wear them.

  • According to your ticker your wedding is 9 months away so they should have plenty of time to order you a new dress. Are you getting it altered right now? Seems kind of early for that...

  • I would demand a new dress. I find it suspicious that a bran new dress straight from a designer came with a stain on it.....Demand a new dress if you have time
  • If your dress is stained and it will not come out, the store should order you a new dress.  Period.  No putting a random applique on top of it.  I would be fighting tooth and nail over this.

As for your Mom not liking your shoes, remind her that you are wearing them, not her, so as long as you like them then that is all that matters.

Also, have to agree with PP, it is quite early to start the alterations process.

  • Wedding dresses are expensive.... you didn't pay all that money to have a nasty stain on the NEW dress.  I would insist that they order you a new dress (no cost to you).  No applique, no excuses.  Are they trying to sell you a sample at full cost?  If so, that is shady.  You have plenty of time to have them order you a new one.  Do not leave the store with the stained dress... make them send it back.

Give them a chance to make it right (i.e. order you a new one), but don't take "no" for an answer.  If they refuse, I would demand a refund and call my credit card to dispute the charge.  I'd also open a can of whoop-a$$ on them on Yelp and weddingwire, but that's just me.

  • Well my dress wasn't supposed to be in until September, so I wasn't planning on alterations so soon. But if they do wind up having to order me a dress, it's better that I have already been in and seen it and now they have my measurements, which aren't subject to change. I'm trying to gain some weight (muscle) before the wedding, so I'm not worried about it fitting in May. But I've heard too many horror stories about people not getting their dress back in time, and I also have no where to keep it until May (yet). Sadly, it is at Davids Bridal that all of this is going on, which is disappointing because I had such a good experience with actually picking out my dress.

  • Seriously. Make them order you a new dress. Db is also notoriously expensive and bad at alterations. make them get you a new dress and consider taking it to an independent seamstress for your alterations.
  • Um, just because your dress has come in does not mean that you have to start alterations right away.  My dress (from a local bridal salon) came in, in December but I didn't start the alterations until end of May.
