Do I have to match my dress to the season? My hair to the dress?

I'm planning my wedding for October 2012. I love in Connecticut, so there's a good chance it will be chilly on my wedding day. The dress I have fallen in love with (found it at a vintage shop, and they're holding it for me while I try on other dresses) is a long, A-line, strapless taffeta gown. Do I HAVE to wear a shawl or cardigan or something, even if I'm not cold, to make it look "seasonably appropriate"? The September issue of Brides magazine said something to that effect. My dress is plain white except for the gorgeous silver beading along the sweetheart neckline. A shawl/wrap/cardigan would cover up the most elaborate part of my dress! Will I look silly or unfashionable if I don't match the season?

Also, my dress does not have flowers of beads in the shape of flowers or anything floral at all, but I am in love with the idea of having real flowers in my hair, rather than a veil or tiara. My mother says flowers will look silly and out of place with my dress. Does my hairstyle have to match my dress?
